PSV Eindhoven has installed a new Signify grow-lighting system to ensure that the grass in Philips Stadium stays in tip-top condition.

Philips said the Eindhoven football club is the first to use a specially developed combination of energy-efficient Philips LED and infrared lamps, linked to various sensors that continuously measure environmental factors such as daylight, temperature and humidity.

All collected data is processed by a central control system that accurately determines how much light and heat the grass needs to grow optimally.

PSV Eindhoven is a Dutch sports club from Eindhoven, Netherlands. It is best known for its professional football team which has played in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football, since its inception in 1956. The Philips Stadium serves as its home field.

With a capacity to hold 36,500 spectators, it is the third-largest football stadium in the Netherlands.

After a successful pilot last year, PSV has chosen to replace the inefficient HPS lamps with the innovative Philips GreenPower LED growth lamps, specially developed for sports grass and stadiums.

Signify has equipped PSV with the greenest choice for a smart, automated system that can dim the LED and infrared lamps separately.

This ensures that the grass receives exactly the additional lighting and heat it needs, on top of natural daylight, to remain strong and healthy.

In addition to improving the condition of the grass, the system consumes significantly less power. The efficiency of the lamps has already achieved energy savings of 50%. On top of this are the savings achieved by dimming the lamps based on the needs of the grass.

Signify collaborated with VTI Horst for the renovation and installation of the lighting system, De Enk Groen & Golf, who as field managers at PSV, take care of the daily management of the grass, and Westhoven Agro Advies for grass measurements and advice.

All these companies are part of the ‘Grass Innovation Team’ that meets regularly to evaluate and optimize grass quality.

With the installation of the new system, Signify and PSV have underlined their commitment to technological progress and sporting excellence, by not only ensuring a perfect playing field, but also using energy efficiently.

Philips Stadium is currently undergoing a series of upgrades. The upper ring on the North side of the venue is being renovated. The outer area of the ring will be closed off, the catering space will be equipped with premium facilities and more restrooms will be built.
