The National Hockey League (NHL) announced on Tuesday a new event for the 2020-21 regular seasons, the NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe™, which will feature two regular-season outdoor games along the South shore of North America’s largest alpine lake, on the border of California and Nevada.

Bridgestone NHL Outdoors Saturday will showcase the professional ice hockey NHL team Colorado Avalanche and the NHL team Vegas Golden Knights on February 20th, 2021.

Honda NHL Outdoors Sunday will see the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins (both NHL teams) clash on February 21st, 2021. Both games will be played without fan attendance.

NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe™ continues the tradition the League established of staging outdoor games during the regular season, with the upcoming games in February marking the 31st and 32nd chapters of such events since 2003.

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league in North America, currently comprising 31 teams: 24 in the United States and 7 in Canada.

Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, straddling the border of California and Nevada (US). It’s known for its beaches and ski resorts.

The rink for NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe™ will be located on the lakefront 18th fairway of the golf course at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort, the annual site of the American Century Championship since 1990, and host of the 1985 U.S. Senior Open and 1980 U.S. Amateur Public Links. Set along the scenic Lake Tahoe shoreline, Edgewood Tahoe Resort is a 235-acre, LEED-certified luxe mountain haven overlooking the iconic Sierra Nevada.

The Avalanche, Bruins, Flyers and Golden Knights will each wear their adidas Reverse Retro ADIZERO Authentic jersey for the outdoor event. The Reverse Retro jerseys represent unique and historical moments in each club’s history, while refreshing the color and design combination for an all-new presentation. Since its introduction in November, the Reverse Retro jerseys are among the top-selling NHL items worldwide at NHLShop.com and NHLShop.ca.

Chuck Fletcher, Philadelphia Flyers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, stated, “On behalf of the Philadelphia Flyers, we are thrilled to be able to participate in one of the two outdoor weekend games in Lake Tahoe. In a real ‘Mystery Alaska’ setting, our game versus the Boston Bruins will take place on the shore of Lake Tahoe with the picturesque Sierra Nevada mountains towering above the rink. This will surely be an unforgettable spectacle and we’re very excited to be a part of it.”

A press release sent out by the league quoted the NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman as stating that the “unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic played a role in choosing Lake Tahoe as the location, as previous ideas from placing an outdoor match in an off-stadium setting was not possible due to the logistics of fan participation.”

Bettman added, “We are thrilled to announce the NHL outdoor games in Lake Tahoe and look forward to being on site for what will no doubt be two exciting games in a breathtaking setting. Since we started hosting outdoor matches in 2003 and this is a regular feature of our annual program in 2008, we have considered a myriad of off-stadium settings, but they have always been made impractical due to the high volume of demand from our fans.”

He continued, “This season, unable to accommodate our usual crowds at such events, we will continue our tradition of bringing the game and our players back to their outdoor roots when the Avalanche meets the Golden Knights and the Bruins take on the Flyers in the open air skating rink at the spectacular Edgewood Tahoe Resort.”

Bridgestone NHL Outdoors Saturday will mark the first ever regular-season outdoor game for the Golden Knights and the third such game for the Avalanche.

Honda NHL Outdoors Sunday will mark the fourth NHL regular-season outdoor game for the Bruins and the fifth such game for the Flyers.
