In two years’ time, Germany will be hosting a major soccer showcase – the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship.

‘kicker’ stated that however, fans are a disappointed lot because supporters who will grace the event from all over Europe will still have to remain seated throughout the show though the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) has allowed standing room again in European Cup after long 20 years.

The 2024 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as UEFA Euro 2024 (stylized as UEFA EURO 2024) or simply Euro 2024, will be the 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international men’s football championship of Europe organized by UEFA. Germany will host the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from June 14th to July 14th, 2024.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach soccer in Europe as well as Israel in Asia and the Eurasian transcontinental countries of Russia, Turkey, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and Kazakhstan. UEFA consists of 55 national association members. Because of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA suspended all Russian national representative teams and club teams from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.

In July this year, the continental football association UEFA decided to bring standing room back into the European Cup: A ban that has existed since 1998 is being lifted on a test basis – at least in some countries.

Earlier this year, the members of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Executive Committee voted in favor of the provisional return of standing areas for fans.

A decision was taken that safe standing will be trialed in European club matches in England, Germany and France this season in a move which could see an end to a ban on standing introduced more than 30 years ago.

‘kicker’ further stated that standing room has been banned in European club competitions since 1998. Clubs in the Bundesliga, for example, had to rebuild their stadiums for these competitions, sometimes at great expense, and install seat shells in standing areas. Since the current season, standing areas have again been permitted as a test in Germany, France and England. However, standing room is still not an option at the European Championship in Summer 2024 – regardless of the outcome of the pilot project initiated by UEFA.

The German Football Association (DFB) shared, “Since the outcome of the pilot project will only be available in the Summer of 2023 and just one year before the UEFA spectacle in Germany, it is too short a timespan to integrate the pilot decisions with the ticket concept of EURO 2024.”
