ManUnited regeneration can create huge economic impact Image: Manchester United

The Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force has discussed its options report with Manchester United F.C., Trafford Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority after meeting for the final time at the end of last year.

The Task Force was created in March 2024 to explore options for regenerating the Old Trafford area with the development of a world-class football stadium at the heart of the project.

Manchester United Football Club, commonly referred to as Man United, is a professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England (UK). They compete in the Premier League, the top tier of English football.

Old Trafford is a football stadium in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England (UK) and is the home of Manchester United F.C. With a capacity of 74,310, it is the largest club football stadium in the United Kingdom and the 12th-largest in Europe.

A report compiled by Oxford Economics said a world-class 100,000-seater stadium for Manchester United, built as part of a regenerated Trafford Park, could deliver an additional £7.3 billion per year to the UK’s economy.

Initial estimates suggest that the new development project will contribute huge growth to the UK economy, including the creation of 92,000 new jobs, more than 17,000 new homes as well as driving an additional 1.8 million visitors per year.

The initial findings of the report are based on a range of potential development opportunities in the Old Trafford area, including a 100,000-seater world-class stadium, plus new mixed-use developments around the stadium and in the adjacent Trafford Wharfside area.

Foster + Partners has been appointed by Manchester United to lead the development of a masterplan for the Old Trafford Stadium District in Manchester.

Foster + Partners will also provide expert recommendations on how the Old Trafford Stadium District masterplan can align with the existing Trafford Wharfside masterplan and support the objectives of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

Following the final meeting of the Task Force, chairman Lord Coe said: “The final meeting of the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force in 2024 marked the conclusion of months of feasibility work to explore ways in which the development of a world-class football stadium can catalyse regeneration of the area around Old Trafford, delivering huge social and economic benefits for the local community, and the wider region.

“This has been a multi-stakeholder process that has collected views from over 50,000 fans, plus residents, community members and businesses. Today we discussed the outcome of this work in the form of an options report with Manchester United, Trafford Borough Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority to help inform their decision-making process.

“At every stage we have challenged all involved to recognise the opportunity that sport presents as a powerful driver for transformational urban regeneration and that is reflected in the report. Manchester United will now work together with local authorities to review the findings and agree a path forward in the months ahead.”

The club will continue its feasibility and engagement work into 2025, with a decision on the direction of travel regarding a redeveloped or new-build stadium expected in the summer.
