In a meeting held recently in the Noble Hall of the Football Anonymous Society (SAF) of the Brazilian professional football club Portuguesa the Série D club presented a project to revamp their home ground – the Estádio do Canindé in São Paulo, Brazil – which will see a marked rise in the venue capacity.

‘A Post on X by Portoguesa’ presented the Canindé refurbishment project along with the real estate company Revee.

Construction work on the new Canindé Stadium is expected to begin in January 2026 and will last up to 40 months.

The Football Anonymous Society (SAF) is a type of public limited company in Brazil. The Associação Portuguesa de Desportos, commonly referred to as Portuguesa or Lusa, is a Brazilian professional football club based in the district of Pari, São Paulo (Brazil) which competes in the Campeonato Paulista, the top tier of the São Paulo State football league and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D, the fourth division of the Brazilian football league system. It is part of a sports club founded on August 14th, 1920 by the Portuguese population of the City.

The 21,004-capacity Estádio do Canindé, also known as the Estádio Oswaldo Teixeira Duarte, is a football stadium which was inaugurated on January 11th, 1956 in the Canindé neighborhood, São Paulo, Brazil.

The redecoration plans for the Portuguesa home ground – the Estádio do Canindé – include a significant increase in the stadium capacity from the current 21,004 to 46,500 seats for the football matches and potential expansion to 84,500 for concerts and major acts. The plan aims to modernize the stadium into a state-of-the-art facility transforming it into a vibrant multipurpose venue that will revitalize the grounds and provide more teeth to the community.

Apart from the ‘Lusa’ home revamp the facility precincts will include a social club, a garage for 4,600 cars, a hotel, and a food boulevard.

On behalf of the Portuguesa the meeting was attended by the Investing Partner and President of the SAF Alex Bourgeois, the Investing Partner and President of the Board of Directors of SAF, André Berenguer and several other big cheeses.

Jayme Mestieri of JLM Architecture (architecture firm in São Paulo, Brazil), the firm that designed the project, and Leonardo Falbo Donato, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Revee, provided details on the new Canindé stadium which will also boast 4,685 seats in the Boxes on gamedays and will be expanded to 84,500 seats for the concerts and the events.

‘A Post on X by Portoguesa’ quoted Bourgeois as stating, “We will have a new stadium armed with cutting-edge technology to welcome our fans and the major events. It will be a gift not only to ‘Lusa’ but also to the City of São Paulo.”
