The City of Nuremberg has awarded the project management contract for the next phases of the complete reconstruction of the Max-Morlock-Stadium in Nürnberg, Germany.

‘nuernberg.de’ stated that the contract was awarded to the strategic consultancy company PROPROJEKT Planungsmanagement & Projektberatung GmbH which prevailed over several competitors in a Europe-wide tendering process. The City Council arrived at the decision in its most recent closed session.

The 50,000-capacity Max-Morlock-Stadium is a stadium in Nuremberg, Germany, which opened in 1928. It is located next to the Zeppelinfeld (Nazi Party rally grounds). It also neighbors the Nuremberg Arena.

Frankfurt (Germany)-based the PROPROJEKT Planungsmanagement & Projektberatung GmbH is an owner-managed consulting firm specializing in project management for planning, construction and sports. They proactively support the projects – from initiation to implementation. The firm understands the strategic, administrative and technical challenges of the complex planning projects and the major sporting events.

‘nuernberg.de’ further stated that in a construction project the project management assumes the overall responsibility for the organization, the coordination, the control of costs, the deadlines, the quality, and the contracts. It ensures that all the stakeholders collaborate effectively so that the project remains within the agreed-upon parameters and the project goals are met. In particular, PROPROJEKT will support the work of the planning office asp Architekten GmbH, which was recently commissioned to develop the preliminary plans for the complete stadium renovation.

The asp Architekten GmbH combines architecture, urban planning and processes for the people and the future. They meet the challenges of transformation with cross-scale planning and dialog-based processes. The asp’s offices in Stuttgart and Berlin (Germany) employ around 100 people who collaborate with the interdisciplinary teams. They share a desire to relate various ideas to one another to create robust, future-proof spaces that enrich people’s lives.

The tender included project management during the preliminary planning phase which will be completed within approximately one year as well as the optional follow-up services after this phase. These services include, in particular, the preparation of a functional specification by the end of 2026 as the basis for tendering a general contractor and the preparation and support of the corresponding European Union (EU)-wide tendering procedure.

Belgium-based the European Union (EU) is a supranational political and economic union of 27 Member States that are located primarily in Europe. The Union has a total area of 4,233,255 km2 (1,634,469 sq mi) and an estimated population of more than 450 million as of 2025.

The tendering process was conducted in two stages as an EU-wide negotiated procedure. A total of six applications were received of which five applicants were admitted to the bidding phase. Following the negotiations and an evaluation Of the quality and the price PROPROJEKT was awarded the contract with the most economically advantageous offer.

Explained Christian Vogel, 3rd Mayor of Nuremberg, “Overall, we received very strong applications which underlines the importance of this project. PROPROJEKT prevailed in the transparent competition for its competence, structure and experience. The project management team’s task is to keep an eye on the overall project – coordinating the deadlines, the costs and the processes, identifying the risks early and ensuring that all the parties involved work well together.”

PROPROJEKT has been involved in the stadium project since the feasibility study was out and brings extensive experience in managing the complex, large-scale projects. The contract will be awarded in stages and the search for a General Contractor begin only after the City Council has passed the relevant resolutions.

Commented Immanuel Geis, Project Manager and Partner, PROPROJEKT Office, “We are very pleased to be able to support the City of Nuremberg and the club for the further development of the Max-Morlock-Stadium into an innovative and sustainable sports venue.”

The City currently invests significant sums each year to keep the Max-Morlock-Stadium safe and usable. This throws up challenges and also opportunities for the stadium and the surrounding sports complex. The City commissioned a feasibility study to identify and evaluate various scenarios – renovation, modernization, or new construction – for the stadium and the surrounding area. The results were presented in July 2023 and the City Council unanimously approved the proposed course of action.
