Gateshead Arena gets green light Image: HOK

Rejigged plans for the £260m Newcastle Gateshead Quays (UK) waterfront conference center, arena and hotel have been cleared by the local Council.

The ‘Construction Enquirer’ stated that BAM Construction is presently carrying out basic civil works at the large site next to the Sage centre ahead of starting main construction this Spring.

The £260m Gateshead Quays (UK) development, which will encompass a 12,500-capacity arena to be run by ASM Global – a venue and event management company based in Los Angeles, United States, specializing in managing stadiums, convention centers, theaters, and unique venues.

The Gateshead Quays will comprise a cutting-edge design 12,500 capacity arena, conference, banqueting and exhibition spaces, plus two onsite hotels offering more than 300 bedrooms.

The Quayside is an area along the banks (quay) of the River Tyne in Newcastle upon Tyne (the North bank) and Gateshead (South Bank) in the North East of England, United Kingdom.

The rehabilitation scheme, to be built by the Newcastle Gateshead waterfront at Gateshead Quays, will boast 29,000 sqm area venue for entertainment and sports alongside international conferences, meetings and exhibitions as well as festivals and cultural events. Media sources stated that boxing, darts and basketball are among the sports set to be staged in the arena.

The ‘Construction Enquirer’ further stated that the latest changes to design mostly focus on the hotel which has been scaled down by two floors in height but extended in footprint. The conference and exhibition center green roof will be replaced with a photovoltaic roof.

The mixed-use entertainment district, being developed by Ask Real Estate and Patrizia AG, is expected to support up to 950 construction jobs and 1,110 supply chain jobs per annum over the three-year build period.

Said John Rhodes, Director of Sports + Entertainment at project architect HOK, “We’re thrilled to see the project progress through planning and look forward to the catalytic growth that will result from this investment in the City.”

The 12,500-seat arena will host music, cultural and sporting events, as well as conferences and exhibitions.

The flexible seating bowl design comprises fixed, retractable and removable seats, allowing the venue to transform to accommodate audiences as small as 1,500.
