The 2022-2023 Serie A seasons (Italy) – the top of the Italian football league system – has recorded the best average attendance since the year 2000.

‘CALCIO FINANZA’ stated that out of the 20 Serie A clubs of Italy, five of the clubs managed to exceed the 90 percent attendance rate.

The Serie A, also called Serie A TIM for national sponsorship with TIM, is a professional league competition for football clubs located at the top of the Italian football league system and the winner is awarded the scudetto and the Coppa Campioni d’Italia.

Rome (Italy)-based the TIM S.p.A., commonly known as the TIM Group, is an Italian telecommunications company with headquarters in Rome, Milan and Naples (Italy), which provides fixed telephony and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) data services. It is the largest Italian telecommunications services provider in revenues and subscribers.

The scudetto is a decoration bearing the colors of the flag of Italy which is sewn onto the jersey of the Italian sports clubs that won the highest level championship of their respective sport in the previous season.

The Coppa Campioni d’Italia is the trophy that in Italian football represents the victory of the Serie A championship.

The 2022-2023 Serie A seasons started on August 13th, 2022 and ended on June 4th, 2023.

‘CALCIO FINANZA’ further stated that the top Italian championship, in terms of attendance at the stadium, has experienced one of the best seasons in recent years. In fact, the data analyzed and reworked shows that the 2022-2023 seasons boast the second best average number of spectators in Serie A since the year 2000, with only the 1999-2000 seasons a notch above the 2022-2023 seasons. In fact, the recorded average was 29,495 spectators against 30,025 for the championship at the turn of the new millennium.

That it was a season with few precedents was demonstrated by the data on seasonal spectators by the top-flights Inter Milan and A.C. Milan, which overall came close to two million total attendances at their residence – the 75,817-capacity San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy – with an average of over 70,000 spectators.

Of equal significance are the numbers recorded by A.S. Roma at their residence – the 72,698-capacity Stadio Olimpico in Rome – where all its matches were a total sellout till the end of the season. The top-flight boasted packed house not only in Serie A but also in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Europa League fixtures.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach football in Europe and the transcontinental countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia, and Kazakhstan, as well as some Asian countries such as Israel, Cyprus and Armenia. The UEFA consists of 55 national association members. Because of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the FIFA and UEFA suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.

The UEFA Europa League is an annual football club competition organized since 1971 by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for eligible European football clubs. It is the second-tier competition of European club football, ranking below the UEFA Champions League and above the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The UEFA Champions League is an annual club association football competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and contested by the top-division European clubs, deciding the competition winners through a round robin group stage to qualify for a double-legged knockout format, and a single leg final. It is one of the most-watched club competitions in the world.

The UEFA Europa Conference League is an annual football club competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations for eligible European football clubs. Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions.

While most of the Serie A clubs enjoyed average attendance, more than 90 percent attendance was recorded by five clubs out of the 20. The five clubs are – Inter Milan, A.C. Milan, A.S. Roma, Atalanta B.C., and Juventus F.C. The average attendance has been recorded at just over 80 percent with Inter taking the lead with a record percentage of 95.81 percent.

Right behind the ‘Nerazzurri’ are the A.C. Milan (94.81percent) and the A.S. Roma (92.88 percent). Atalanta B.C. (92.28 percent) occupies the fourth slot followed by Juventus F.C. (90.76 percent). The U.S. Sassuolo Calcio follows with (62.16 percent), the U.C. Sampdoria (60.54 percent), and the Hellas Verona F.C. (60.12 percent).
