Perth’s WACA Ground opens after redevelopment Image: WA Cricket

The redeveloped WACA Ground (Perth, Western Australia) is now open and ready for the entire community to enjoy.

‘WA CRICKET’ stated that blending heritage with innovation the revitalized venue ushers in a new chapter for cricket in Western Australia while honoring more than 130 years of history.

The 10,000-capacity WACA Ground is a sports stadium in Perth, Western Australia. The stadium’s name derives from the initials of its owners and operators – the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA).

The WA Cricket (formerly known as the Western Australian Cricket Association or WACA) is the governing body for cricket in Western Australia. The WACA was formed on November 5th, 1885. In 1893, the Association opened the WACA Ground.

‘WA CRICKET’ further stated that the iconic stadium has been thoughtfully reimagined to deliver world-class facilities, vibrant community spaces and an enhanced matchday experience.

The $189 million WACA Ground Improvement Project is jointly funded by the Australian Government, the WA Government and the City of Perth in collaboration with the WA Cricket and Cricket Australia (governing body of cricket in Australia) and supported by Lotterywest (Western Australian lottery operator).

The redevelopment blends sport, wellness and lifestyle supporting the WA Cricket vision to make the WACA Ground precinct more vibrant and inclusive.

A state-of-the-art High-Performance Centre is at the heart of the precinct featuring a 10-lane indoor center and elite training amenities.

The project also introduces The Pavilion – a new aquatic and wellness zone complete with a resort-style pool, waterslides, splash park, fully equipped gymnasium, and the group fitness studios ensuring the WACA Ground remains one of Perth’s most unique and accessible sporting precincts.

The visitors can then unwind at Wirin, the onsite public café, while watching their children play in the Lotterywest Karda Playspace.

A revitalized museum will open mid-year honoring the rich history and heritage of the WACA Ground and inspiring the next generation.

The project crucially preserves the character of the WACA Ground maintaining its heritage and celebrating the stories that have shaped Australian cricket. The aboriginal cultural narratives have also been incorporated into its planning and design.

Commented Catherine King, Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, “The completion of the WACA Ground Improvement Project is a defining moment for sport in Western Australia and for Australia. Our support is helping to ensure the WACA Ground remains a place where history is honored, excellence is built and the communities come together.”

Remarked Rita Saffioti, WA Deputy Premier and Sport and Recreation Minister, “The WACA Ground holds a special place in the hearts of the Western Australians and this redevelopment ensures it will continue to play a central role in our State for generations to come. This redevelopment offers something for everyone, from professional athletes accessing the best high-performance facilities, to the local families enjoying the pool and water slides. The Western Australians can now enjoy the new era of Perth’s iconic WACA Ground. The new WACA Ground brings together elite sport, community facilities and family-friendly activities right in the heart of our City.”

Put in Patrick Gorman, Federal Member for Perth, “This grand opening means our City can now reap the significant economic and lifestyle benefits of the landmark redevelopment. The WACA Ground is a bastion for sport in Western Australia and now it will be an even better destination for the cricket fans, the athletes and the broader Perth community.”

Added Bruce Reynolds, City of Perth Lord Mayor, “The above marks an exciting new chapter for cricket in Western Australia with the opening of the redeveloped WACA Ground. It’s incredibly exciting to see this iconic ground enter a new era and continue to inspire the next generation of players and supporters. The City’s $25 million investment in the new aquatic facility is a major contribution toward making Perth an even better, more livable City for generations to come. The City of Perth is proud to support cricket in WA while also delivering vibrant community infrastructure that benefits the residents and the visitors alike.”

Noted Todd Greenberg, Cricket Australia head honcho, “Providing the best facilities for our teams, the players and the staff is a key objective across Australian Cricket and the redeveloped WACA Ground will be a fantastic asset for the game. It’s equally important that the greater cricket and the local community will benefit from this investment. Well done to everyone at WA Cricket who worked tirelessly to upgrade one of cricket’s iconic venues and to the WA Government, the Australian Government, the City of Perth, the WA Cricket Foundation, and the Lotterywest for their support.”

Opined John Stephenson, WA Cricket Chief Executive Officer (CEO), “This is about honoring our past while stepping confidently into the future. The WACA Ground has long been synonymous with the iconic cricket moments – and now it is a facility that will serve the players, the Members, the fans, and the broader community for decades to come. From grassroots participation through to elite performance, this facility changes what’s possible for cricket in our State. It strengthens our pathway for the girls and the boys, enhances our ability to host domestic and international cricket and creates a vibrant community destination that is active 365 days a year. This project ensures cricket in Western Australia has a home that matches its ambition.”
