Venezia FC will operate new stadium Image: Venezia FC

Fresh construction footage has offered supporters their clearest look yet at the Serie B team Venezia FC’s (Italy) future stadium.

‘FOOTBALL GROUND GUIDE’ stated that with the opening now less than two years away the project is beginning to feel very real.

The Venezia Football Club is an Italian professional football club based in Venice, Veneto (Italy) that currently plays in Serie B, the second tier of Italian football. Originally founded as the Venezia Football Club in 1907 the club have spent a large part of their history in Italy’s top two divisions.

The 12,048-capacity Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo is a multiuse stadium in Venice, Italy. It is the largest sports facility in Venice and is the home ground of the Venezia FC. The stadium was first opened in 1913 and takes its name from the World War I pilot Pier Luigi Penzo (1896-1928). It is the second-oldest continually used stadium in Italy (the oldest being the Serie A team Genoa CFC’s abode – the 33,205-capacity Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa).

‘FOOTBALL GROUND GUIDE’ further stated that the Venezia FC is set to move away from the iconic Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo home in 2027.

New footage from the Bosco dello Sport development shows visible progress being made on Venezia’s new stadium which is scheduled to open in summer 2027.

The ‘Bosco dello Sport’ is conceived to be a new epicenter of sports and life for the Metropolitan city of Venice with the strategic goal of offering the community a model place where, through sports and education, the cultures of sharing, social cohesion and psycho-physical well-being can be promoted and cultivated all within an area characterized by deep ecological and environmental awareness. The project, including all its components, covers a very large territorial surface of 115.56 hectares. The Venezia FC new home has been designed to host both national and international Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) football competitions as well as national and international rugby competitions. For these types of events it has been sized for a maximum of 16,000 spectators. The stadium can also be used for social events such as concerts.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the governing body of football in Europe uniting 55 national associations and overseeing the promotion, regulation and development of the sport across the continent.

The club is expected to spend one final season at the historic Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo before moving into their new home.

Located in Tessera, just outside Venice, the new ground is being designed by the leading architecture firm Populous and will hold around 18,500 supporters.

Populous is a global architectural and design practice with regional headquarters in Kansas City (US), London (UK) and Brisbane (Australia) specializing in the sports facilities, the arenas and the convention centers as well as in the planning and design of the major special events.

As well as the Serie A matches the venue is intended to host European football, rugby internationals, concerts, and major entertainment events.

The stadium will form part of a much wider Bosco dello Sport project which also includes a new 10,000-seat indoor arena for basketball, volleyball and live events.

Construction footage shows the basic outline of the stadium site now beginning to emerge with the groundwork and early structural elements becoming more visible.

The aim is for the entire complex to become a year-round destination for sport and entertainment rather than simply a football ground used every other weekend.

Leaving Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo will be emotional but has long felt inevitable. There are few stadiums in world football quite like the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo.

Its setting, history and old-school character make it one of the most iconic grounds anywhere in Europe.

But, it is also a stadium that increasingly feels stuck in another era.

The limitations around the capacity, facilities and access have held Venezia back for years particularly if the club want to establish themselves in Serie A and potentially compete in Europe.

That is why, however sad it will be for the Venezia FC to leave, this feels like a necessary step.

The challenge for Venezia will be making sure the new stadium captures at least some of the atmosphere and uniqueness that made Penzo so special in the first place.

Tender Exercise

Earlier, the Venezia FC SpA welcomed the award of the tender for the concession to manage the new stadium at Bosco dello Sport after the proposal submitted by the company was deemed suitable and compliant with the necessary requirements.

The company is now ready for the final procedural step, the signing of the concession agreement.
