RS Architekci wins Katowice stadium design bid

Polish architecture firm RS Architekci has won the design competition for GKS Katowice football club’s new stadium, local news website Lodz Post reported.

Katowice Mayor Marcin Krupa announced the winning design earlier this month. The design from JSK Architekci came second with the third position going to LAP Studio and Stoprocent Architekci.

Ruda Slasla-based RS Architekci will design the stadium, hall and training fields for Katowice. The firm had earlier also developed the best concept of the hall next to the Bytom stadium.

The new stadium will be built in Bocheńskiego, south of the city of Katowice. Tthe stadium will have a capacity of 12,000 seats and an adjoining sports hall will accommodate 2,500-3,000 people. There will be additional development next to the stadium and six training football fields.

The design of the stadium proposed by the architects is simple and spatial. The stadium and hall buildings will be connected with the administrative and sports facilities running between them and stately colonnade will welcome the spectators. Behind the colonnade will be a translucent wall made of anodized aluminium profiles that will have the golden colour of GSK Katowice. There will be a possibility of future expansion by adding further rows inside the stadium to increase the capacity safely to 15,000 viewers.

The PLN 186 million ($50 million) project is anticipated to complete in the year 2021. The architectural firm will now submit the plans for the completion of the project, with the actual work starting by 2019.
