On March 30th the Ekstraklasa (the highest level of the Polish football league system) teams GKS Katowice and Górnik Zabrze will face-off at the Arena Katowice, a new municipal sports complex in Katowice, Poland, and the new home of the GKS Katowice.

The GKS Katowice will move to the Arena Katowice later this month and the club played its last match at their former home ground – the Stadion Miejski in Chorzów, Poland, on March 9th.

‘gkskatowice.eu’ stated that the GKS Katowice and Górnik Zabrze game will be the first fixture to be played at the former’s new home venue – the Arena Katowice – and this derby by the top-flights will make for a lot of thrilling moments.

The GKS Katowice is a Polish professional football club based in Katowice, Poland. They currently compete in the Ekstraklasa in the 2024-2025 seasons after gaining promotion from the I liga (the second-tier professional association football league below the Ekstraklasa) in 2024.

The Stadion Miejski is a football stadium at the Silesian Culture and Recreation Park in Chorzów, Poland. It was the home ground of the GKS Katowice till the first week of this month. The venue holds 6,710 people and was built in 1955.

The Górnik Zabrze is a Polish football club from Zabrze, Poland. Górnik is one of the most successful Polish football clubs in history winning the second-most Polish Championship titles together with the I liga team Ruch Chorzów.

The 24,563-capacity Arena Zabrze, officially known as the Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla w Zabrzu, is a football stadium in Zabrze, Poland. It is the home ground of the Górnik Zabrze. Originally constructed in 1934 it is currently in the process of completely being rebuilt. Once the redevelopment work is over the capacity of the facility will rise to 31,871.

The Arena Katowice, officially named the ‘Stadion Miejski w Katowicach’ (Municipal Stadium in Katowice), is a new Municipal sports complex located at the Nowa Bukowa Street in Katowice, Poland, featuring a football stadium with 15,000 seats, a sports hall and spiffy training facilities. It is the new home of the GKS Katowice.

The stadium has been designed with cutting-edge spatial construction techniques including a partially transparent, lattice façade. The stands have been sheltered from the weather elements and provide clear sightlines. The complex will be surrounded by a covered colonnade.

‘gkskatowice.eu’ further stated that the Arena Katowice is a modern sports complex which will also boast a sports and entertainment hall that can accommodate over 3,000 spectators. On March 30th, during the derby clash between GKS Katowice and Górnik Zabrze, the fans will get the opportunity to savor the match in this majestic facility in its full grandeur and glory.

Maintained Marcin Krupa, GKS Katowice President, “Various events will be held in the above venue the whole year through. Nowa Bukowa will soon become a popular place and there will be a lot of celebratory moments. We hope that the GKS Katowice players will be able to celebrate their glorious and successful moments in this new home of theirs – the Arena Katowice.”

The GKS Katowice is due to play their subsequent home matches against the Ekstraklasa teams Puszcza Niepołomice, Legia Warsaw, KS Cracovia, and the Lech Poznań at the new stadium.

The roads leading to the Arena Katowice are still under construction for which no private vehicles will be allowed inside the stadium on the above match day. To make the ride to the stadium smooth for the fans the City of Katowice is launching two free bus services straight to the venue that will provide a safe and comfortable ride to the fans.
