Lusail Stadium’s ‘west stand is rising up’

All eyes are on Qatar as it prepares to host 2022 FIFA World Cup™. The Gulf nation will be the first from the Arab world to host the mega event, also breaking with tradition with a winter kick-off as it looks to avoid the scorching summer heat.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailed Qatar’s progress on infrastructure during a visit to its capital, Doha, last month after inspecting the eight stadiums and several training sites that will be used for the month-long tournament, Doha-headquartered Al Jazeera reported.

“You can see the progress which is being made here four years before kick-off,” Al Jazeera quoted Infantino as saying after a tour of the Al Wakrah stadium, a 40,000 capacity venue that will host matches up to the quarter-finals stage.

“The Russian World Cup was the best ever, and the World Cup in 2022 has to be even better,” he said, adding: “I think this World Cup is extremely important, not only for Qatar but for the whole region – a region that has a passion for football and is investing a lot in the game.”

Meanwhile, construction work on Lusail Stadium – which will host the opening ceremony and the final of the tournament – is on full swing. According to the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), the concrete superstructure of the stadium and seating terraces are at an advanced stage.

“The world will remember Lusail Stadium as a place where football history was made. It will host the opening ceremony of the Middle East’s first FIFA World Cup™ – and the final,” the SC declared in a press statement.

“Concrete foundation works here are approaching completion, the west stand is rising up and seating areas are also under construction,” it added.

No design of the stadium in Lusail, about 23 kilometers from Doha, has been revealed yet.
