Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup™’s local organizing committee recently unveiled the stunning design for Lusail Stadium, the venue at which the opening and final games of the sporting extravaganza will be held. The venue is also poised to leave a lasting legacy.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) revealed the design of the 80,000-capacity at a gala event at Lusail Marina. The venue will be the largest stadium during the tournament, which will be the first to take place in the Arab world.

Located 15km north of central Doha, Lusail Stadium will form the centerpiece of the new ultra-modern Lusail City, the construction of which is 90 per cent completed.

As well as being situated in the heart of the city of the future, the area in which the Lusail Stadium is being built holds significant cultural and historical significance for the country, as it was once the home of the founder of modern Qatar, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani Al Thani.

Renowned British firm Foster + Partners provided the design concept for the stadium. The venue’s golden vessel takes its inspiration from an Arab architectural sense as much as it does from literal symbolism by celebrating the region’s ancient tradition of craftsmanship.

The organizers are building only eight stadiums for the one-month tournament and are promising to deliver the completed venues two years before the kick off.

Lusail Stadium aims to leave a lasting legacy and lead by example for future venues, according to a SC statement.

After the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Lusail Stadium will be transformed into a community space, including schools, shops, cafes, sports facilities and health clinics. This multi-purpose community hub will allow people to find everything they need under one roof – the original roof of the football stadium.

“After most of the seats have been removed from Lusail Stadium, a remarkable transformation will take place. Schools, housing, shops, cafés and even health clinics will emerge under the arena’s roof, turning the venue into a unique community hub for the fast-growing city that surrounds it. The remaining seating rows in the upper tier will be cleverly integrated into terraces and other public spaces,” the SC said in a statement posted on its official website.

Keeping these seats and the roof of the stadium intact will supply a constant reminder of this place’s glorious sporting history. In addition, the proposed inclusion of a community football pitch will continue Lusail Stadium’s footballing story – and reinforce our commitment to supporting the grassroots game.

As well as inspiring football fans, potential football stars and those who enjoy the community space it will become, Lusail Stadium will also leave lessons for those creating stadiums in the future.

Beginning with environmentally friendly building practices and energy conservation, and ending with its donation of seating and integration into the neighbourhood, this venue will become a model of sustainable stadium development.

“Leading by example will be the final legacy of Lusail Stadium,” the SC asserted.
