3XN to build FC Bayern and EHC’s joint home

Danish architecture firm 3XN have been roped in to build an as-yet-unnamed multipurpose stadium in Munich’s Olympic Park, which once complete, will be home to two teams – the FC Bayern München Basketball and Eishockeyclub (EHC) Red Bull München, according to media reports.

“This will be a hall for masters!” declared German tabloid The Bild, while reporting that the stadium will be built by beverage manufacturer ‘Red Bull’ at the site of the recently demolished Radstadion velodrome.

The new arena will feature three canopied ice rinks and an oval-shaped green roof that merges with the surrounding park landscape. Landscape design for the al fresco space and the ground-level concourse will be carried out by Latz + Partner.

Another notable element of the structure will be its facade, which will have a lamellar or membranous shape, representing a series of interlinking bone tissue.

Plans for the Olympic Park property were first moved in September 2018 by software company SAP SE, the project’s developer.

The Bild report said that the 11,500-seat sports complex, once completed, will look like “a landed UFO with green roof”.

“The new sports arena will integrate harmoniously with the existing park landscape, while its structured facade and roof greening will create elegant highlights,” Munich’s mayor, Christine Strobl, said.

“For the City of Munich, the special agreement to make the ice rinks available to its citizens for 8,000 hours each season presents a unique opportunity to create excellent skating conditions for schools, clubs and the general public,” he added.

“The sports arena will help strengthen the Olympic Park’s position as an outstanding venue for both professional and grassroots sports in Munich,” Strobl said.

The project is expected to be completed by 2021.

The naming of the stadium is still open. SAP has launched a social media campaign #NameGameOn, inviting fans to propose names for the future facility. Fans can submit their options at namegameon.com until March 4. The only condition: The word “SAP” must be included in the name. The fans would then vote on the best suggestions, based on which the winner will be announced on March 20.
