Aston Villa to start revamp work behind north end

Aston Villa – the English professional football club based in Birmingham, England – has been given the go-ahead to pull down major current buildings behind the north stand at Villa Park. New superstore, museum and hotel will spring up in Birmingham.

As of now, it’s a vast asphalt parking site comprising old buildings. The first one features ticket office and club store, the second accommodates needs of the training academy.

These buildings might soon become history because in late September Aston Villa got the nod for knocking down both the buildings following a two-month evaluation.

In a briefing made by the City Council, it has been informed that tickets and merchandise will be available nearby, in temporary setting – “Aston Villa Football Club is proposing to move the ticket office/merchandise store into temporary units elsewhere on site. It is intended that the footprint of this building will be used as excess capacity for car parking on match days.”

The date has still not been set for demolition work to begin. However, there are strong indications that it will not materialize before the end of the current Premier League season. One point is clear – there is a strong appetite for success under the new ownership.

Christian Purslow, Chief Executive at Aston Villa, remarked, “We have 7,000 on a wait-list (for season tickets) for the first time in the club’s history. Villa Park is 42,000 capacity and if Villa gets properly established in the Premier League, we will have demand to require us to add capacity.”

He further asserted, “There are plans where we can infill. Knocking down Villa Park? No chance! Villa Park is a cathedral to football.”
