Plans to redecorate the Grünwalder Stadion in Munich, Germany, has started picking up momentum. Till February 24, the local people may give their views and get information on revamping the football stadium. Meanwhile, once again a tenant of the ground may be forced to relocate (the women’s team of FC Bayern has already been moved). Presently, the venue does not meet the standards even for 2. Bundesliga (the second division of professional football in Germany).

The consultation process has begun for planned expansion and reshaping of the football facility at Grünwalder Straße. One of the major developments is extension of the venue from present 15,000 to precisely 18,105 spectators at peak. A study conducted by Frankfurt-headquartered architects Albert Speer + Partner (AS&P.) gives a better run-through of the whole project.

As per the study, the arena’s vast western curve, currently accommodating some 8,800 standing fans, will reduce in size by 900. The plus point is that the stadium will get a roof over the entire terrace. The south stand will witness major reconfiguration work which will augment its capacity to 4,100, for the first time all covered.

Though constructed only in 2014, the east stand will see expansion by 6 meters upwards. If this happens, it will nearly double in capacity, to fewer than 3,000, and the fans will also get to enjoy a roof over them. The north stand of the venue – which is the most state-of-the-art section – will see number of seats coming down to 3,300 (by some 1,200). However, spectators will get to enjoy the best of corporate hospitality facilities.

The changes to be implemented in the home facility of the German football club TSV 1860 Munich (primary tenant of the stadium) are likely to facilitate 2. Bundesliga games to be played here, should any of the host teams secure promotion. Following the development, fans will have a more enriching experience in the stadium, starting with new crowd circulation and gates.

An option to surround all corners of the facility with acoustic walls is being taken into consideration and may just be a piece of good news for the residents residing in and around the stadium. This would allay their fears of annoying levels of noise on match days.

Crowded facility

The Grünwalder Stadion was among the most used in Munich’s football. It hosted TSV 1860, Bayern’s reserves and ladies, as well as regional league’s Türkgücü.

Due to too much of tenants, the women’s team of FC Bayern was moved to the new Bayern campus. Things will get more complex again in mid-2020.

The German association football club Türkgücü are almost certain of getting promoted to 3. Liga, which means all three tenants (1860 Munich, 1860 Munich-II and Bayern Munich II), would play on the same level. With fixtures likely to clash, it is almost certain that Bayern II (the reserve team of German association football club Bayern Munich) will move away.
