Ekaterinburg Arena stands to be dismantled

The striking temporary stands used for hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ games at Ekaterinburg Arena in Russia will be torn down as work begins on repurposing the stadium as a multipurpose venue.

The Ekaterinburg Arena is a football stadium in the city of Yekaterinburg in Russia. It is the home ground of Russian Premier League football club FC Ural Yekaterinburg. The capacity of the stadium is just over 35,000.

Media reports stated that the 12,000 seats used for the two stands will be redistributed across stadia in eight municipalities of the region of Sverdlovsk Oblast, of which Yekaterinburg is the administrative center.

Four group games were staged in the Ekaterinburg Arena during the World Cup, and the temporary stands were able to fit in 35,000 supporters which is the hallmark of a venue to hold a FIFA game.

Extending beyond the façade of the stadium, the temporary stands became a topic which invited discussions during the World Cup, with fans situated in these seats located outside the main bowl.

In October last year, the then Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree transferring Ekaterinburg Arena to the Sverdlovsk region.

A tender process has reportedly been floated to find a partner to modify the facility into a multiuse venue.

The tender documentation published on the public procurement website reads, “Design decisions provide for the dismantling of collapsible stands with the possibility of their further reinstallation (a list of recipients of temporary stands in the amount of 12,000 seats).”

The tender documentation also states that the stands will receive the football field of the ice arena named after Alexander Kozitsyn in Verkhnyaya Pyshma, the Trud Stadium in Polevsky, the Cosmos Stadium in Kamensk-Uralsky, the Central Stadium in Krasnoufimsk, the Sports and Sports Center in Verkhnyaya Sinyachikha, the stadium ‘Energy’ in Berezovsky and the Stadium ‘Kolos’ in Talitsa.

Temporary stands of the Yekaterinburg-Arena Stadium were erected during its preparation for the reception of the matches of the 2018 World Cup.

During the championship, the stands became a kind of guiding light for the stadium, and received the popular name ‘ears’.

The original plan had it that after the championship matches the temporary stands would be dismantled and given for use to sports arenas in the cities of the Sverdlovsk region.
