After the successful resumption of Bundesliga in Germany, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, announced on Saturday that La Liga can resume behind closed doors from June 8.

The league’s President Javier Tebas said he had hoped Spain’s top flight would restart on June 12, although La Liga is yet to confirm a restart date.

La Liga is the men’s top professional football division of the Spanish football league system.

Sanchez confirmed that football will be among a host of activities which will resume in the country soon as the coronavirus curve has started flattening.

Last week, La Liga players started training in groups of not more than 10.

“Spain has done what it should and now new horizons are opening for everyone. The time has come to bring back many day-to-day activities,” remarked Sanchez.

“From June 8, La Liga will be back. Spanish football has a huge following but it will not be the only recreational activity that will return,” added Sanchez.

Media reports stated that the Spanish second division is also set to resume at the same time as the top flight, with reports in Spain suggesting the derby between Sevilla and Real Betis will be the first La Liga game to take place.

Sevilla is a Spanish professional football club based in Seville, Spain. It plays in Spanish football’s top flight, La Liga. Real Betis is a Spanish professional football club based in Seville and plays in La Liga.

Tebas tweeted in support of Sanchez’s decision and said the resumption of the league was made possible due to the good work put in by the players, clubs and coaches.

“We are very pleased with the decision. It is the result of the great work of clubs, players, coaches, CSD (National Sports Council) and agents,” Tebas stated.

“But, we cannot lower our guard, it is important to follow health regulations and ensure the pandemic doesn’t come back,” added Tebas.

Football in Spain was suspended on March 12 because of the coronavirus pandemic which has taken a huge toll of lives and has greatly affected Spain.

The players in the top two divisions were only able to return to individual training in early May after being tested for the virus.

Five players tested positive for the virus across Spain’s top two divisions and went into isolation before the first phase of group training was allowed from May 18.

La Liga teams have 11 games to play this season, with leaders Barcelona two points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the division.

With 58 points, Lionel Messi-led Barcelona are currently the league leaders in La Liga, however, they have a cushion of just two points against arch-rivals Real Madrid, who occupy the 2nd spot with 56 points from 27 games. The title race is expected to heat up once again when the season resumes in Spain.

Portugal’s Primeira Liga to resume on June 3

Portugal’s Primeira Liga will resume on June 3 and fans will be treated to the best of summer football with matches to be played almost every day, as per a new fixture list the league released on Saturday.

The Primeira Liga, also known as Liga NOS for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional association football division of the Portuguese football league system. It is organized and supervised by Liga Portugal.

The championship will restart on June 3 with Portimonense against Gil Vicente and Famalicao hosting leaders Porto. The 25th round of matches will continue over the following three days, with second-placed Benfica at home to Tondela on June 4.

Portimonense Sporting Clube is a Portuguese sports club based at Portimão in southern Portugal. It currently plays in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football. Gil Vicente is a Portuguese football club which also competes in the Primeira Liga.
