The construction work of the new Donauparkstadion in Linz, Austria, is all set to get started. The formal laying of the foundation stone will take place on January 21st, 2021. A large majority of people in the finance committee gave the go-ahead to the project. The development had recently come in for a lot of flak over the cost angle.

The foundation laying ceremony is a formal act that creates the basis for the implementation of the redesign of the area between the Voest Bridge and the New Danube Bridge.

Earlier, the development price tag had come to 9 million euros, but now it is being estimated that the 14 million euros would be expended for the stadium alone.

Donauparkstadion is a stadium in Lustenau, a quarter of the City of Linz, Austria. It is currently used for football matches and is the home ground of Blau-Weiß Linz (Austrian association football club). The stadium can hold 2,000 people.

The damage for the construction work between the Voest and the new Danube Bridge will come to between 25 and 28 million euros. The remaining money will be invested in a furniture warehouse on which the Donauparkstadion will sit, as well as in additional attractions such as shops and restaurants.

Linz Mayor Klaus Luger (SPÖ) stated that the above development will come with a lot of advantages and will also help in generating jobs. The City’s sports fraternity will also go on to benefit from the new arena, the Mayor observed.

The new Donauparkstadion will hold 5,000 spectators and will be the home of the second division soccer club FC Blau-Weiß Linz. In the new venue of Blau-Weiß Linz, games of the women’s national team and the U20 and U21 teams from Austria is also likely to be held. In the summer of 2023, Blau-Weiß Linz should be able to play its first games in the Donauparkstadion.

Luger stated that the establishment of a holding company is being mulled to create the structure in which the new stadium will be built. The project is being financed by the real estate company of the City of Linz, which will refinance the investment through long-term rental income.

“By finding a holding company, we are creating the structure within which the municipal real estate company, together with Blauweiss Linz and the furniture company XXXLutz and with the support of the State, is building a new stadium and a furniture warehouse, among other things,” stated Mayor Luger in his role as Financial Advisor for the City of Linz.
