With the United Kingdom (UK) surpassing 100,000 COVID deaths in a grim new milestone, and the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, declaring that lockdown will remain in the country till July 17th, 2021, fans returning to stadia seem a remote possibility in the near future in UK.

However, the professional association football club, Chesterfield F.C., hopes to go completely cashless at their home venue – Technique Stadium – once football returns to normal and fans are greeted back into stadiums keeping in mind the safety and security of supporters.

Chesterfield Football Club is a professional association football club based in the town of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. The team competes in the National League, the fifth tier of the English football league system.

The 10,600-capacity Technique Stadium is an all-seater football stadium in Whittington Moor, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, on the site of the former Dema Glassworks. It is the home of Chesterfield F.C., replacing the Saltergate Recreation Ground as the club’s stadium from the start of the 2010-11 seasons.

Company Secretary Ashley Carson stated that the stadium would be looking to go cashless once football returns to normal – “Now that everyone has got used to spending by card and their phones, using Apple Pay etc., we will be looking to switch the stadium to cashless when we reopen.”

Added Carson, “With the contactless limit also increasing to £45, there are many other benefits apart from just hygiene and many other stadiums are moving this way.”

Carson asserted that looking at the deadly form of the COVID-19 situation in various parts of the world, and especially in the United Kingdom, “one needs to think about the safety of the staff as well as fans and reduce the amount of cash being handled”.

Meanwhile, season tickets for Chesterfield FC’s 2021-22 campaign has gone on sale with people able to buy them initially over email and phone.
