The Uruguayan capital Montevideo will host this year’s final of both the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) said recently.

‘Xinhua’ quoted CONMEBOL as stating that the South American country Uruguay was selected because of its relative success in combating COVID-19 – the virulent virus which has blown to smithereens half of the nations in the world including the most powerful and developed countries – and the country’s advanced vaccination program.

The 2021 Copa Libertadores Final will be held on November 20th. The 2021 Copa Sudamericana Final will be played on November 6th.

The 2021 Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores is the 62nd edition of the CONMEBOL Libertadores (also referred to as the Copa Libertadores), South America’s premier club football tournament organized by CONMEBOL.

On May 13th, 2021 CONMEBOL announced that the final will be played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay on November 20th, 2021.

The 2021 Copa CONMEBOL Sudamericana is the 20th edition of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana (also referred to as the Copa Sudamericana, or Portuguese: Copa Sul-Americana), South America’s secondary club football tournament organized by CONMEBOL.

On May 14th, 2020, CONMEBOL announced the candidate venues for the 2021, 2022 and 2023 club competition finals. On May 13th, 2021 CONMEBOL announced that the final will be played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay on November 6th, 2021.

The South American Football Confederation is the continental governing body of football in South America, and it is one of FIFA’s six continental confederations. The oldest continental confederation in the world, its headquarters are located in Luque, Paraguay, near Asunción.

The 60,235-capacity Estadio Centenario is a stadium in the Parque Batlle neighborhood of Montevideo, Uruguay, used primarily for football. The stadium was built between 1929 and 1930 to host the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup™, as well as to commemorate the centennial of Uruguay’s first Constitution.

‘Xinhua’ further quoted CONMEBOL as stating, “The good health situation projected for November in Uruguay, a country that plans to vaccinate a large percentage of its population in July, was decisive in an exceptional year affected by the pandemic.”

The 2022 Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana finals would be held in the Ecuadorian port City of Guayaquil and Brazilian capital Brasilia, respectively.

More than a third of Uruguay’s 3.5 million inhabitants have received at least one vaccine dose, according to local officials. The country’s Health Ministry has reported around 3,250 COVID-19 deaths and 228,000 confirmed cases of the virus.

CONMEBOL said the matches would be used to boost Uruguay’s bid to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup™ alongside Argentina, Paraguay and Chile.
