Oakland Athletics considering temporary stay in Las Vegas Image: MJR Group Ltd./Coliseum

The Major League Baseball (MLB) team Oakland Athletics (US) have got rolling the process of hunting for a new home, and seems to have zeroed in on Las Vegas. The team is visiting with City officials in Las Vegas after presenting a sizable plan in Oakland that failed to include affordable housing.

The ‘Draftkings Nation’ stated that the ‘A’s’ and team President Dave Kaval have been flirting with Las Vegas since the ‘A’s’ announced plans in May this year to consider relocation. Kaval told newsmen recently that the team would consider all options, including using the Minor League Baseball (MiLB) stadium in Las Vegas (read the Las Vegas Ballpark, a new 10,000-seat facility) until the ‘A’s’ get their own new facility.

The Oakland Athletics, often referred to as the ‘A’s’, are an American professional baseball team based in Oakland, California. The Athletics compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League West division. The team plays its home games at the 63,132-capacity Oakland Coliseum.

The franchise, with the blessing of Major League Baseball (MLB), is exploring leaving the Bay Area after years of failing to secure a new ballpark. And Las Vegas is at the top of the list as far as relocation plans are concerned.

Kaval commented, “That’s something we’re exploring as a possibility, because it’s hard to know how long these things are going to take. We would have to understand all the different options and when things could occur. But since there is such a state-of-the-art facility already there (Las Vegas Ballpark), it’s at least an option.”

Dave Kaval, President, Oakland Athletics, US, will speak at the Coliseum Online Week US Worldwide, August 30 to September 3, 2021.

The ‘Draftkings Nation’ further stated that the ‘A’s’ lease at the Oakland Coliseum expires in 2024. They could work a deal and be a lame duck, but a scenario could arise when one or both sides try to end the deal early. Of course, a battery of lawyers would definitely get involved. Realistically they’re already plenty involved trying to sort out this whole stadium mess in which the ‘A’s’ find themselves in.
