COVID leaves Borussia Dortmund bleeding white

COVID-19 has left Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund bleeding white as is the case with most sporting entities. The club finished the 2020-2021 financial years with huge revenue losses suffered due to the coronavirus pandemic.

‘dpa’ stated that the preliminary figures of the club, a publicly traded company, recently reported a revenue of 334.2 million euros (392.8 million dollars), 36 million euros less than in the previous year.

The consolidated net loss amounted 72.8 million euros, which is more than the 44 million euros from the previous year, but slightly lower than feared.

Borussia Dortmund is a German professional sports club based in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The ‘dpa’ further stated that in May, Dortmund said they expected a loss of around 75 million euros. They managed to limit the negative effects of the pandemic by qualifying for the Champions League at the end of the 2020-2021 seasons and winning the German Cup.

The UEFA Champions League is an annual club football competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and contested by top-division European clubs, deciding the competition winners through a round robin group stage to qualify for a double-legged knockout format, and a single leg final.

The DFB-Pokal (German Cup) is a German knockout football cup competition held annually by the German Football Association. Sixty-four teams participate in the competition, including all clubs from the Bundesliga and the 2. Bundesliga. The present champion is Borussia Dortmund and it is the fifth title for them.

Dortmund said in stock market statement, “Income and earnings were substantially affected by the effects of the restrictions imposed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Just like other Bundesliga clubs, Dortmund were not able to welcome fans to their home stadium – Signal Iduna Park – this term due to the COVID clobber globally and that led to a huge loss in gate-related income.

With match operations, Dortmund had just 600,000 euros in revenue in 2020-2021. In the previous year, this amount was of 32.5 million euros.

The 81,365-capacity Westfalenstadion is a football stadium in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, which is the home of Borussia Dortmund. Officially called the Signal Iduna Park for sponsorship reasons and BVB Stadion Dortmund in UEFA competitions, the name derives from the former Prussian province of Westphalia.
