Africa Cup of Nations at capped capacity

Following extensive consultations with the Cameroon Government in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic the Omicron variant of which is causing ravages the world over, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Local Organizing Committee have agreed to cap the capacity of the stadiums during the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021, between 60 percent and 80 percent.

The ‘CAF Confederation Africaine de Football’ stated that the 80 percent capacity will apply only during host nation Cameroon matches while the rest of the matches will be capped at 60 percent capacity.

The Confederation of African Football or CAF is the administrative and controlling body for African association football.

The TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, also known as AFCON or CAN (Coupe d’Afrique des Nations), is the flagship football tournament in Africa organized by the Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF). It was first held in 1957 in Sudan with three teams (Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia) participating.

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (also referred to as AFCON 2021 or CAN 2021), known as the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship reasons, is scheduled to be the 33^rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the biennial international men’s football championship of Africa organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The tournament is being hosted by Cameroon and will take place from January 9^th to February 6^th, 2022.

The ‘CAF Confederation Africaine de Football’ further stated that the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations will kick off on January 9^th, 2022 at the 60,000-capacity Olembé stadium in Yaoundé (capital of Cameroon).

Earlier in December 2021, the CAF and Cameroon Government agreed on strict health protocols that will be followed including allowing only vaccinated supporters inside the match venues. All the parties are still fully committed to the implementation of the agreement including other sanitary protocols that have been adopted.

The CAF will continue to monitor the situation and the evolution of the health conditions and adapt measures if need be.
