The Serie B club Cagliari Calcio (Italy) announced recently that it has presented the Definitive Project for their new stadium plans to the Municipality of Cagliari. The new venue will be built next to their present digs – the Unipol Domus – in the place of Sant’Elia.

‘Cagliari Calcio’ stated that the above is a crucial step initiated in the process for the construction of a state-of-the-art facility which will also go on to benefit the community on which it sits.

Cagliari Calcio, commonly referred to as Cagliari, is an Italian football club based in Cagliari, Sardinia (Italy). In the 2022-2023 seasons, the club competes in the Serie B. As of 2021-2022, the team is temporarily playing their home games at the 16,416-seat Unipol Domus, adjacent to their future new stadium site.

The Unipol Domus is a football stadium in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy. Built in 2017 as the Sardegna Arena, it hosts Cagliari Calcio football matches since 2017 since the 16,000-capacity Stadio Sant’Elia was closed and partially demolished in order to build a new stadium.

‘Cagliari Calcio’ further stated that the club thanked the Costim Group, industrial partner of the project, David Manica and Sportium for having taken care of the design, as well as Monitor Deloitte and Chiomenti, respectively, financial advisor on the economic aspects of the plan and the law firm that took care of every legal aspects of the development. The economic-financial plan supporting the project, aimed at guaranteeing its balance, was certified by Unicredit.

Costim is an individual holding company headed by Francesco Percassi which deals with the “turnkey” construction of large urban regeneration projects.

Within the next six months a decision will be arrived on at the Definitive Project in a Municipal Decision-making Services Conference, aimed at obtaining the declaration of public utility of the work. Then the public tender procedure, with an international tender for a maximum duration of 90 days aimed at being able to start the works, will be floated. Once the demolition work of the Sant’Elia is over, the time schedule foresees a construction period of about 25 months, until the inauguration of the new stadium.

Remarked Tommaso Giulini, ‘Rossoblù’ President, “This is a watershed moment for the club despite the Russia-Ukraine war hugely hitting the supply chains and there is a steep rise in the prices of raw materials as well as transportation charges. Despite several constraints, we were able to pull off a fruitful dialog with our partners and we worked our fingers to the bone to give shape to the Definitive Project, something that we strongly desired. This is a crucial phase of our journey, for Cagliari and for Sardinia as a whole, to which we want to make available something unique and strongly anchored to its roots, capable of contributing to the sustainable growth of the City from an economic and social point of view.”
