King Power Stadium expansion on the cards

Councilors are set to approve plans for the Premier League club Leicester City F.C. (UK) to expand its residence – the King Power Stadium – by 8,000 seats.

‘BBC News’ stated that the club applied for planning permission from the Leicester City Council in October after a public consultation.

The Leicester City Football Club is a professional football club based in Leicester in the East Midlands of England (UK). The club competes in the Premier League, the highest level of England’s football league system, and plays its home matches at the King Power Stadium.

The King Power Stadium is a football stadium in Leicester, England (UK). It has been the home of Premier League club Leicester City since 2002, and has an all-seated capacity of 32,261. Since 2021, the stadium has also been the primary home of Leicester City Women.

‘BBC News’ further stated that it also wants to build a new hotel and business center, a flagship fan store, an events arena, and residential flats.

The Council’s planning committee was set to vote on the plans on August 14^th but officers have recommended they approve the designs.

Leicester City wants to expand the capacity of their ground to 40,000 seats, making it the 10^th largest among current Premier League sides.

The club said more than 1,000 jobs would be created during the construction period, with another 1,000 permanent positions across facilities on the site.

The Council documents show that the planning officers have recommended that the committee members vote to approve the plans.

If approved, the Premier League club will have to set out more specific plans and agree to a financial deal with the local authority.

The contributions will go towards the improvement and accessibility of The Raw Dykes Scheduled Ancient Monument, affordable housing as well as traffic and transport provision.

Since revealing the plans, the club has purchased the site previously owned by energy company E.On on Raw Dykes Road close to the stadium.

The club said that the site does not form part of the current application, but is essentially an additional asset for any future developments.

The Raw Dykes is a Roman earthwork and scheduled monument in Leicester (UK). The monument consists of two parallel banks up to 20 meters apart, with an excavated channel running between them. A stretch 110 meters long survives, but originally the earthwork was at least 550 meters in length.
