New Everton Stadium as EURO 2028 venue

The United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland are strong favorites to win their joint bid to host the UEFA European Championship in 2028.

‘FanNation Futbol’ stated that England would host the majority of games at EURO 2028 under the proposal.

The 2028 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Football Championship, commonly referred to as UEFA EURO 2028 or simply EURO 2028, will be the 18^th UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international football championship organized by UEFA for the senior men’s national teams of its member- associations.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach soccer in Europe as well as Israel in Asia and the Eurasian transcontinental countries of Russia, Turkey, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and Kazakhstan.

UEFA consists of 55 national association members. Because of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA suspended all Russian national representative teams and club teams from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.

‘FanNation Futbol’ further stated that it is understood that there would likely be 11 different venues – six in England, two in Ireland, one in Wales, one in Scotland, and one in Northern Ireland.

The 51,700-capacity Aviva Stadium and the 82,300-capacity Croke Park are Ireland’s two biggest and best venues and are almost certain to be put forward as part of the bid.

But the decision to choose the six English stadiums is less straightforward.

Several major arenas have already been ruled out, including the Premier League clubs – Arsenal F.C.’s 60,260-capacity Emirates Stadium in London, England, Chelsea F.C.’s 41,837-capacity Stamford Bridge in London, England, and Liverpool F.C’s 53,394-capacity Anfield in Liverpool, England.

Anfield and Stamford Bridge will not be permitted to host games at EURO 2028 due to the size of their pitches.

Meanwhile, the Emirates Stadium has been overlooked in favor of the 62,850-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, which is just four miles away and has a slightly larger capacity and more modern facilities.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is one of 10 English stadiums that have reportedly been shortlisted as part of the bidding process.

The Premier League club Everton F.C.’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock has also been shortlisted. It is due to open in 2024.
 

English Stadiums Shortlisted as Possible Host Venues for UEFA EURO 2028:

• The 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium (London);
• The 42,785-capacity Villa Park (Birmingham);
• The 60,000-capacity London Stadium (London);
• The 52,405-capacity St. James’ Park (Newcastle upon Tyne);
• The 55,097-capacity Etihad Stadium (Manchester);
• The 49,000-capacity Stadium of Light (Sunderland);
• The 52,888-capacity Everton Stadium (Liverpool);
• The 30,500-capacity Stadium MK (Milton Keynes);
• The 62,850-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London); and
• The 74,310-capacity Old Trafford (Greater Manchester).

 
This list of 10 stadiums will be cut to six by UEFA, according to reliable sources.
