A proposed deal for the National Hockey League (NHL) team Arizona Coyotes’ (US) new arena will go to a public vote.

‘Daily Independent’ further stated that the Tempe City Council voted unanimously recently to send a proposed arena and entertainment district to referendum in May.

The Arizona Coyotes are a professional ice hockey team based in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area in Arizona, US. The Coyotes compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Central Division in the Western Conference and currently play at the Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona, US.

The Mullett Arena is a 5,000-seat indoor multipurpose arena at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, US. It is the home of the men’s ice hockey, women’s ice hockey, women’s gymnastics, and men’s wrestling and a temporary venue for the National Hockey League’s (NHL’s) Arizona Coyotes from 2022 through at least 2025.

The City of Tempe in Arizona (US) wants a professional sports team to develop 46 acres of City-owned land that is currently a solid waste compost yard into a stadium or arena and an entertainment district and the National Hockey League (NHL) team Arizona Coyotes are ready to give their right arm to take up the task.

The proposal for the $1.7 billion development in Tempe calls for private funding along with a portion of funding coming from City tax revenues to pay for $200 million on top of that.

‘Daily Independent’ further stated that the City Council must approve a development and disposition agreement, a general plan amendment and a zoning amendment before the May 16th special election can take place.

The Coyotes have been negotiating with the City of Tempe to build on a tract of land just West of downtown in their bid to find a permanent home.

The team is currently playing at the Arizona State’s 5,000-seat Mullett Arena, by far the NHL’s smallest arena.

The Coyotes have been searching for a permanent home since the City of Glendale pulled out of a multimillion lease at the 18,300-capacity Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, US.

Arizona had been playing on an annual lease until Glendale said it would not be renewed for the 2022-2023 seasons.

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league in North America comprising 32 teams – 25 in the United States and 7 in Canada. It is considered to be the top ranked professional ice hockey league in the world and is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.
