Italy Maradona Stadium put on the market

The Municipality of Naples has put up the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples (Italy) for sale.

‘Il Mattino’ stated that the City is looking out for potential investors who can pick up the tab of future restructuring of the facility.

The 54,726-capacity Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, formerly known as the Stadio San Paolo, is a stadium in the western Fuorigrotta suburb of Naples, Italy. It is the fourth largest football stadium in Italy, after Milan’s 75,817-capacity San Siro Stadium, Rome’s 72,698-capacity Stadio Olimpico and Bari’s 58,270-capacity Stadio San Nicola.

The SSC Napoli is an Italian professional football club based in the City of Naples that plays in Serie A, the top flight of Italian football. Napoli has won three Serie A titles, six Coppa Italia (the annual domestic cup of Italian football) titles, two Supercoppa Italiana (annual Super Cup tournament in Italian football titles) and one UEFA Cup. The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona serves as their home venue.

‘Il Mattino’ further stated that the City wants that the entity which will come forward to buy the stadium should turn the venue surroundings into a Green hub and parks should be set up. The young crowd should be able to enjoy and premium facilities should be on offer for fans to savor an exhilarating experience.

In October 2019, Napoli entered into a fresh five-year lease agreement to continue playing at the stadium. The deal contained the option of a further five-year extension, which could see the arena serving as the home digs of the club through to 2028.

The City is all set to begin talks with the Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis over a new lease agreement and the latter might make an offer to buy the stadium.

The Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, stated that the Maradona Stadium needs “extensive restructuring”.

The Municipality of Naples approved the renaming of the stadium in honor of Diego Maradona after the death of the soccer legend in 2020. Maradona was instrumental in Napoli bagging two Serie A titles from 1984 to 1991.
