Rangers home expansion plans ‘long way off’

The Scottish Premiership team Rangers Football Club chiefs are set to consider a possible huge stadium expansion which could see the Rangers’ residence – the Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland (UK) – capacity increased to 70,000.

‘The Herald’ stated that however, despite tentative discussions over the possible building work, it’s understood a massive expansion is a long way off and remains simply an avenue of exploration at this stage.

The Rangers Football Club is a Scottish professional football club based in the Govan district of Glasgow (UK) which plays in the Scottish Premiership. Although not its official name, it is often referred to as Glasgow Rangers outside Scotland.

The Ibrox Stadium is a football stadium on the South side of the River Clyde in the Ibrox area of Glasgow, Scotland (UK). The home of the Scottish Premiership team Rangers Football Club, Ibrox is the third largest football stadium in Scotland, with an all-seated capacity of 50,817.

The Scottish Premiership, known as the cinch Premiership for sponsorship reasons, is the top division of the Scottish Professional Football League, the league competition for men’s professional football clubs in Scotland.

‘The Herald’ further stated that ambitious possible expansion plans could see between 8,000 and 10,000 seats added to the capacity of the Copland and Brooloan Stands at the Ibrox Stadium.

The possibility of adding 700 seats to the corners of the stadium between the Sandy Jardine Stand and Copland and Broomloan Stands has also been tentatively discussed.

The Ibrox chiefs have also carried out an investigation into the possibility of adding half a dozen rows of seats around the pitch if the playing surface is lowered.

Although, again, it’s understood plans are at a very early stage with feasibility studies still being conducted.

The plans were first vocalized in a Fan Forum event held at the New Edmiston House in Glasgow but it’s understood that the Chief Executive of Rangers F.C. James Bisgrove was merely outlining potential options.

As it stands, there have been no guarantees made over the stadium expansion. Instead, the Ibrox chiefs are merely considering options that have been suggested with significant work required to discover if the ambitious expansion options would be possible.

The Rangers have already signed off on building work to install a new cantilever structure and two platforms behind both goals at the stadium as part of an investment in top-quality disabled facilities.

It’s understood work could begin next Summer with a multimillion-pound investment into the stadium upgrade.

Meanwhile, a statue at the Ibrox Stadium of the legendary Manager of Rangers F.C. Walter Smith is expected to be unveiled in the New Year.

The club will carry out work on the footprint of the Ibrox Stadium with tarmac access roads and stadium steelwork to be completed alongside the installation of the statue.

It’s expected that the fans will be given the opportunity to pay their respects to the late former Manager Smith – who died in October 2021 – when the statue is unveiled next year.
