The Brazilian sports clubs – Clube de Regatas do Flamengo and Fluminense FC – getting an extension to run the show of their residence – the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – till the close of 2024 has stirred up a hornet’s nest with the top-notch club Vasco da Gama sulking over the same.

‘bnn’ stated the top-flight Brazilian football club Vasco da Gama is vehemently protesting over the above extension. It has all become an issue of power play which goes against the very spirit of the Maracanã Stadium.

The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, more commonly referred to as simply Flamengo, is a Brazilian sports club based in Rio de Janeiro in the neighborhood of Gávea, Brazil, best known for their professional football team that plays in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top of the Brazilian football league system.

The Fluminense Football Club, known as Fluminense, or more commonly as Flu, is a Brazilian sports club best known for its professional football team that competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A, the first tier of Brazilian football.

The 78,838-capacity Maracanã Stadium, officially named Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, is an association football stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The stadium is part of a complex that includes an arena known by the name of Maracanãzinho, which means ‘The Little Maracanã’ in Portuguese. The venue is the home ground of the top-of-the-heap clubs Flamengo and Fluminense.

The Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, commonly referred to as Vasco da Gama or simply Vasco, is a sports club based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Although originally a rowing club and then a multisport club, Vasco is mostly known for its men’s football team, which currently competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top tier of the Brazilian football league system. Its home ground is the 21,880-capacity Estádio São Januário in Rio de Janeiro. The club also plays its home matches at the Maracanã Stadium.

Power Tussle

‘bnn’ further stated that the unfolding drama over the management of the Maracanã Stadium’s management has blown the lid off the simmering tension and power tussle within Brazilian football. The Flamengo and Fluminense getting to call the shots of the Maracanã Stadium have not gone down well with Vasco da Gama thus bringing out into the open the bitter rivalry between these clubs.

Commercial Angle

The entire showdown over managing the Maracanã Stadium has brought into sharp focus the commercial angle – the tussle between clubs to take over control of assets like the Maracanã Stadium bears testimony to the fact that few soccer-clubs have become more business-minded and look out only for commercial gains. Ethical conduct and integrity in football has come under cloud.

Vasco smarting over Flamengo and Fluminense getting an extension to run the Maracanã Stadium all boils down to the commercial benefits involved. Ethics be damned!
