Serra Dourada Stadium revamp on horizon

Serra Dourada Stadium in Brazil is set to undergo a major renovation and modernization raising its capacity to 44,000.

Globo said the renovation, which is expected to be completed in 2028, covers the entire stadium area and the neighboring Goiânia Arena Gymnasium.

The revamp will be undertaken by Construcap, the company that won the concession auction for Serra Dourada and will be responsible for the complex for the next 35 years.

Estádio Serra Dourada is a football stadium inaugurated on March 9, 1975 in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. It was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The stadium primarily hosts state matches.

The initial investment in the redevelopment is R$300 million ($56 million) and could reach R$1.5 billion during the contract period, a sum that includes preventive and corrective maintenance of the entire complex – not just the stadium – and which was previously the responsibility of the Goiás state government.

One of the most significant changes will be the increase in capacity of the stadium from 38,000 to 44,000 fans – and up to 60,000 on concert days.

The renovations include complete leveling of the concourse ring floor, expansion of restrooms, installation of turnstiles with facial recognition and open access throughout the ring.

More than 60 new suites will also be created (with emphasis on facilities at field level, a trend inspired by the NFL brought to Brazil for the first time), in addition to spaces on the intermediate level with air-conditioned suites and new lounges.

There will also be a complete overhaul of the F&B sector, which will now include industrial kitchens, new permanent bars and restaurants.

Arena revamp

The gymnasium, located next to Serra Dourada, will also undergo changes, mainly technological ones, to meet the main needs of a large modern arena.

In addition, the architectural structure will be modified to complement the stadium and improve acoustics.

The internal infrastructure will be renovated with the creation of 29 VIP boxes on the second floor, new hospitality areas, an industrial kitchen.

A new access for trucks will also be created to allow for easy and fast setups for sporting events such as basketball, volleyball, and futsal, as well as large musical performances.

In addition to the stadium and arena, the Serra Dourada Complex project includes a redevelopment of the parking lot to allow for multi-sports courts, exercise equipment, and a linear park with the city’s largest bike path and running track, extending over 3 km, open to the public for daily use.

Samuel Loyd, commercial director of the Serra Dourada Complex, said, “It’s certainly a project that preserves the 50-year history of Serra Dourada but it goes far beyond that.

“It’s about the future, about new generations, about climate resilience issues. I am sure that the locals will be surprised and delighted. It’s much more than just a renovation of a football stadium, we are bringing new features here such as the linear park and reforesting the area.”
