‘Yay’ for Germany Ludwigsparkstadion revamp

The City Council has given the green light for the renovation and expansion of the Ludwigsparkstadion in Saarbrücken, Germany. Accordingly, among other upgrade works, the capacity of the stadium will be increased from the current 16,000 to 18,500.

‘sr.de’ stated that the Saarbrücken City Council decided by a majority vote to initiate a slew of measures to spruce up the Ludwigsparkstadion. Soon, close scrutiny will be done on whether it makes sense to renovate the turf or completely replace it. In either case, the work will be carried out during Summer.

The Ludwigsparkstadion is a multipurpose stadium in Saarbrücken, Germany. The stadium was built in 1953 and once held 35,303 spectators. After renovation, which lasted from 2016 to 2021 and cost €46.5M, the capacity has been reduced to around 16,000 seats. It is currently used mostly for football matches and concerts.

The 1. FC Saarbrücken is a German football club based in Saarbrücken, Saarland. The club plays in the 3. Liga, which is the third tier of football in Germany. The Ludwigsparkstadion serves as their residence.

The Saarland Hurricanes are an American football team from Saarbrücken, Germany. Saarbrücken is the capital of the Federal German State of Saarland, which the club is named after. The club was formed in 1996 in a merger of the two local sides Saarbrücken Wölfe and Dillingen Steelhawks. It plays in the German Football League, an American football league in Germany. The Ludwigsparkstadion serves as their home facility.

‘sr.de’ further stated that the above venue expansion should meet the 2. Bundesliga criteria of the German Football League (DFL). For carrying out the facility expansion work the main tenant of the stadium – 1. FC Saarbrücken – will have to partially bear the costs.

Frankfurt (Germany)-based the German Football League (DFL) is responsible for the entire operating business of the Ligaverband, including the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga (the second division of professional football in Germany) leagues.

The Ligaverband is an association of 36 German professional football clubs (or their companies) that partake in the Bundesliga (the top of the German football league system) and 2. Bundesliga, which represents their interests.

The Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Left and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) voted for the stadium renovation and expansion, while the Greens and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) abstained from voting.

It was also decided that two million euros will be sanctioned on a priority basis to improve the pitch of the stadium as due to a lack of drainage system massive problems occur during the monsoon.

The construction policy spokesman for the CDU Parliamentary Group, Andreas Neumüller, said that aerating the pitch has not produced the desired results so work on treating the pitch should start pronto.
