The Municipal Council of Vila Nova de Famalicão in Portugal has unveiled plans to develop a new stadium for the town’s football club.

The council has asked investors and private developers to come forward with proposals for a new stadium to be built on land where the Municipal Stadium and the training ground are currently located.

The development would also include shopping facilities, a municipal multipurpose park and a new underground car park.

Futebol Clube de Famalicão, commonly known as Famalicão, is a Portuguese professional football club from Vila Nova de Famalicão. Founded in 1931, its senior team currently plays in the Primeira Liga, the top tier of Portuguese football.

Since 1952, Famalicão have played their home matches at the Estádio Municipal 22 de Junho, which has a 5,307-seat capacity.

Town Mayor Mário Passos pointed to the beginning of the second half of this year for the start of the tender procedure, adding that “it is the will of the City Council that the construction of the entire project begins in 2025.”

Passos believes that the new development will create a focal point for the city. He said, “We will be able to enhance the urban space and keep the Municipal Stadium in the same location, providing it with conditions suited to a top national and international football team, all without associated municipal financial investment.”

The Mayor also noted that there is a huge technical team working on the real estate assessment and the studies necessary to open the international public tender.

Under the plans, the municipality will transfer the land to the developers for a set period, after which it will be returned to the town.

During the concession period, the promoter, in accordance with its business plan, will be able to commercially exploit the infrastructure created, and it will be a mandatory clause that the stadium to be built is for the use of Futebol Clube de Famalicão.

The stadium is expected to open in 2027.
