Toronto Tempo Performance Centre to set basketball ‘tempo’

The upcoming Canadian professional basketball team Toronto Tempo and the City of Toronto recently announced plans to develop the team’s first dedicated Performance Centre at the Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

It is scheduled to open in 2028 and will buttress the basketball ecosystem for women in Toronto.
 

Dual Purpose

‘tempo.wnba.com’ stated that the purpose-built facility will serve twin purposes – it will be a high-performance training home for the Tempo and a hub for grassroots engagement thus representing a significant investment in elite athlete development and community access to sport.

The Toronto Tempo is an upcoming Canadian professional basketball team based in Toronto (Canada). The Tempo will compete in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) as a Member of the Eastern Conference and are scheduled to begin play in 2026.

The 9,250-seat Coca-Cola Coliseum is an arena at Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, used for agricultural displays, ice hockey, basketball, and trade shows. It serves as the home ground of the Toronto Tempo.

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a women’s professional basketball league in North America composed of 15 teams scheduled to expand to 18 by 2030. The WNBA is one of the professional women’s sports leagues in North America. The WNBA is headquartered in New York City.

The Exhibition Place is a publicly-owned mixed-use district in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located by the shoreline of Lake Ontario just West of downtown.
 

Performance Centre

‘tempo.wnba.com’ further stated that the Performance Centre will sit in downtown Toronto, a stone’s throw away from the Coca-Cola Coliseum, the team’s home arena. The facility will feature two WNBA regulation courts, state-of-the-art player amenities and thoughtfully designed locker rooms equipped with every resource the world-class athletes need to train, recover and prepare for championship-caliber play.

The globally recognized architecture firm HOK designed the Performance Centre with accessibility at its core. It will welcome everyone year-round, from professional athletes to the local community members, providing access to the premier courts, the training areas and the amenities used by the team during the season.

New York (US)-based HOK is a global design, architecture, engineering, and planning firm. The HOK is a collective of future-forward thinkers and designers who are driven to face the critical challenges of the time.
 

Five Core Principles

Pointed out Paul Harrison, Design Principal, HOK, “This project represents a powerful opportunity to create not only an exceptional environment for elite athlete development but a lasting symbol of equity, civic pride and cultural identity. We rooted the project in five core principles: athlete-first design, inclusive access, civic engagement, sustainability, and future adaptability.”
 

The Performance Centre will include:

• Two WNBA regulation courts;
• First-of-its-kind locker room featuring individual showers and changing areas for each player, salon and vanity spaces, a mother’s room, and elevated interiors that simultaneously prioritize individual privacy and team comradery;
• Dedicated sports medicine, sports performance and recovery areas including treatment and rehab areas, strength and conditioning space, hydrotherapy pools, a sauna, a wellness consult room, and advanced recovery areas;
• Expansive player lounges, fuel bars and a dining area to foster team connection and nutritional health;
• Dedicated spaces for team development including a fully-equipped theater for film study and conference rooms; and
• Collaborative basketball operations and business office spaces combining the team with business in one state-of-the-art facility.

 

Basketball Ecosystem

The Tempo, in sync with the City of Toronto and the grassroots partners, will also deliver development programming at the facility designed to expand access to basketball and create new pathways for the athletes at every level.

The facility also underscores the Tempo’s long-term commitment to investing in infrastructure that advances women’s professional sport in Canada and strengthens the broader basketball ecosystem.
