Panathinaikos receives building permit Image: City of Athens

The building permit has been issued for the construction of a state-of-the-art New Panathinaikos Stadium in Votanikos, Athens (Greece).

‘cityofathens.gr’ stated that the above facility will serve as the home field of the Greek professional football club Panathinaikos F.C. and is expected to be completed in 2026.

The Panathinaikos Football Club, known as Panathinaikos, is a Greek professional football club based in Athens, Greece. They play in the Super League Greece 1, the top of the Greek football league system.

The Olympic Stadium of Athens ‘Spyros Louis’ is a sports stadium in Marousi in the North section of Athens, Greece. With a total capacity of 75,000, it is the largest sports venue in Greece. It serves as the abode of the Panathinaikos F.C.

The above facility will be a part of the larger urban redevelopment project.

‘cityofathens.gr’ quoted Haris Doukas, Mayor of Athens, as stating, “It is a historic day for the Panathinaikos F.C. and Athens. With the issuance of the building permit for the construction of the new state-of-the-art stadium, I would like to thank each and every individual of the Working Group who played a key role in securing the building permission.”

The Working Group also initiated the following steps to pave the way for securing the building permit of the venue:

  • All the arbitrary constructions within the plots owned by the Municipality of Athens were demolished;
  • The relevant spatial changes were made to facilitate the issuance of the license;
  • The permission for tearing down the Panathinaikos’ historic headquarters on Alexandras Avenue was secured, a prerequisite for granting the building permission of the new arena;
  • The road elevation studies were approved by the concerned Ministry; and
  • The necessary permission was also obtained from the Archaeological Department, from the Central Council of Architecture and from the General Secretariat of Sports while ensuring that the Environmental Conditions Approval of the stadium was renewed.

On June 20th, 2024, 115 million euros was sanctioned by the Ministry of Interior for construction of the new venue. An additional amount of 6.8 million euros has also been secured and in a few weeks time it will be shovel-on-the-ground scenario.

The 40,000-seat stadium is designed to be a perfect circle with a three-dimensional roof that covers all the seats. It will also have a ventilated façade that can change color, function as a projection screen and provide outward visibility.

The stadium will be part of a larger complex that will include an athletic center, a basketball arena, a volleyball stadium, an Olympic-size swimming pool, gymnastic facilities, a large park, and commercial uses.

The stadium is designed to be sustainable, energy-efficient and resource-efficient. It will also use photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate solar energy.

The above project holds a lot of significance for Athens (capital of Greece).
