Stadium renovation in Valladolid will move forward Image: Tribuna grupo

The Mayor of Valladolid Jesús Julio Carnero has reassured fans that renovation work on the LaLiga team Real Valladolid’s home venue – the José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid, Spain – remains on track and the club’s ‘Sports City’ plans “will be a reality sooner than later”.

Of late, the top-flight’s pitch performance is nothing to write home about as they sit on the bottom-of-the-heap in the LaLiga table.

‘Tribuna valladolid’ stated that the above assurance comes in the wake of the club’s President Ronaldo Nazário’s intention to sell his majority stake in the club.

Nazário’s years of Presidency has been characterized by mixed success and a tumultuous relationship with the supporters.

The Real Valladolid is a Spanish professional football club based in Valladolid, Castile and León (Spain) that competes in LaLiga, the top professional football league of Spain.

The 27,618-capacity José Zorrilla Stadium is a Municipality-owned football stadium in Valladolid, Spain. It is the 22nd-largest stadium in Spain and the largest in Castile and León (autonomous community in Spain).

‘Tribuna valladolid’ further stated that Mayor Carnero underscored that the City Council and the Real Valladolid were totally committed to remodel the 27,618-seat stadium and the development of a new ‘Sports City’ on the premises. He mentioned about a “good, fluid and communicative” relationship with the club to ensure the projects progress without any hindrance.

Plans for the stadium redevelopment include a €40m investment in a new roof covering three stands and the addition of an upper South Stand increasing the capacity to 30,000-32,000. The €15m ‘Sports City’ project will feature a 2,000-capacity stadium, two new pitches and facilities for the club staff and youth academy players spanning 40,000 square meters.

Mayor Carnero’s assurances suggest that the ongoing infrastructure projects will proceed as planned ensuring a brighter future for the club regardless of any ownership changes.

The Mayor has come under scathing criticism of late for the yawning delay in the implementation of the above developments – the ‘Sports City’ project and the remodeling of the José Zorrilla Stadium.

Though the Mayor did not spell out any deadlines on the above two projects but he averred that work will get off the ground soon.

On the sporting front, the Real Valladolid is enduring a challenging season sitting at the bottom of the LaLiga table with 18 games played. These disappointing results have led to a lot of discontentment among the fans.

Mayor Carnero hoped that the Real Valladolid will soon come out of the “sporting slump” it is presently in.
