The World Air Sports Federation (FAI) has announced that the first ever FAI World Drone Soccer Championships (WDSC) will take place in Shanghai, China, from November 15th-18th, 2025.

‘FAI’ stated that this groundbreaking event will be hosted at the Shanghai Stadium, a state-of-the-art venue located in the Xujiahui Sports Park in China.

Lausanne (Switzerland)-based the World Air Sports Federation (FAI) was founded in 1905. It is a non-Governmental and non-profit making international organization with the basic aim of furthering aeronautical and astronautical activities worldwide ratifying world records and coordinating the organization of international competitions.

The FAI World Drone Soccer Championships, hosted by the World Air Sports Federation (FAI), is a fast-paced, team-based competition where drones compete to score goals while defending against the opponents combining precision flying, teamwork and strategy.

The 72,000-capacity Shanghai Stadium is a football-specific stadium in Shanghai, China. Between 2009 and 2019 the stadium hosted home matches of the Chinese Super League (the highest level of the Chinese football league system) team Shanghai SIPG and serves as the current home of the Chinese Super League team Shanghai Shenhua F.C. since 2023.

The Xujiahui Sports Park, formerly known as the Shanghai Sports Center, is a park and sports complex in the Xuhui District of Shanghai, China, encompassing buildings like the Shanghai Indoor Stadium, the Shanghai Swimming Center and the Shanghai Stadium. It is now being transformed into a vibrant, open urban space.

‘FAI’ further stated that the Aero Sports Federation of China (ASFC), in collaboration with the Shanghai Science and Technology Sports Management Center, will organize and execute the competition ensuring an exceptional experience for the athletes and the spectators alike.

Beijing (China)-based the Aero Sports Federation of China (ASFC), established in August 1964, is the national air sports control body in China representing the country in the World Air Sports Federation (FAI) and overseeing various air sports disciplines.

The Shanghai Science and Technology Sports Management Center is a key organization in Shanghai, China that organizes and executes the sports events particularly those that combine traditional sports with digital technologies and also serves as a training base for the cadres in the Shanghai Science and Technology System.
 

A New Era for Drone Soccer

Drone Soccer, an emerging Aeromodeling sport, combines precision flying, teamwork and strategy in a thrilling, fast-paced competition.

What sets it apart in air sports is its real-time, head-to-head gameplay where the teams actively compete to score goals while defending against the opponents. This dynamic format not only challenges the pilots but also makes it an exciting sport with fast action, strategic maneuver and intense rivalries that keep the audiences engaged.

The 2025 FAI World Drone Soccer Championships will feature two classes: F9A-A (larger field and drones) and F9A-B (smaller, more tactical gameplay) with teams competing for the ultimate title in the FAI-sanctioned drone soccer.

For the first time in the FAI history the F9A-B category will introduce dedicated women’s division encouraging broader participation and fostering gender equality in drone sports.

The 2025 FAI World Drone Soccer Championships represents a significant step forward in the evolution of competitive drone sports bringing together innovation, skill and international collaboration.
 

Cutting-edge Technology and Competition Setup

The Shanghai Stadium will be transformed into a world-class drone soccer arena featuring:

  • Protective cages constructed with tempered glass and shock-absorbing materials for safety and enhanced spectator visibility;
  • Advanced electronic scoring systems using a combination of infrared radio frequency (RF) sensors and photoelectric technology to ensure precise and fair match results;
  • High-tech goal rings with integrated light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and visual effects creating an immersive experience for the players and the fans; and
  • Live match displays on the giant screens and an official event website for real-time scoring updates.

 

Beyond the Competition: A Festival of Innovation and Sport

To celebrate the fusion of technology, sports and entertainment the 2025 FAI World Drone Soccer Championships will host a variety of public events including:

  • An Opening Ceremony featuring team parades, drone light shows and speeches from the dignitaries;
  • An Aeromodeling Carnival where the visitors can experience drone soccer firsthand, explore the latest Aeromodeling technology and enjoy interactive exhibits; and
  • A Closing Gala Dinner blending the Chinese cultural elements with Shanghai’s modern energy to celebrate the achievements of the competitors and the organizers.
