In a chat with ‘Coliseum’, Roberto Muñoz, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & Founder, Biolwa, Mexico, says that lightweight architecture helps in creating beautiful architectural shapes and is inspired by the structures, membranes, shapes, and colors that Nature provides in harmony with the surroundings.

Biolwa is an architecture firm that offers analysis, engineering and consulting services. It is based in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Remarked Roberto Muñoz, “The inspiration behind Biolightweight Architecture comes from life itself. We observe the shapes, function and structure offered to us by Nature where everything already exists to apply it in everyday life and create beautiful and intelligent spaces.”

He informed that the membranes and the structures Biolwa uses are made of light and sustainable materials and can create colossal representations of Nature.

Biolwa has collaborated in the construction of big soccer stadiums and other facilities to create a new shape of lightweight architecture.

Added Muñoz, “Within Biolightweight we integrate new materials and construction systems to build structures that unify cultures and continents.”

He stated, “We made the façades from fabric for the Metropolitan Auditorium in Mexico and the Expo Milano in Italy. The 14,000-capacity Movistar Arena in Bogotá, Colombia, the façades were made from lightweight architecture and not fabric. We execute complex projects of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) in all parts of the world.”

Informed Muñoz, “For light architecture, roofs, or façades we also do lighting design. We also work with steel structures and build steel structures that support the textile membranes. We do analysis of structural membranes.”

He continued, “In 2007, we worked on the VIP and Plus areas of the 87,000-capacity Azteca Stadium in Mexico. The material selected was white inflatable cushions from ETFE as its light and translucent characteristics make it an excellent material to create shade while maintaining natural ventilation.”

Wrap-up

Roberto Muñoz summed up by stating, “We found the project to redesign the façade of the Cuauhtémoc Stadium very challenging and rewarding and we were inspired by the panorama that opens up around the venue. We used materials such as simple layer ETFE and PVDF mesh. At night the light-emitting diode (LED) lights illuminate the façade with diverse colors. The lightweight structure is a benchmark for the football stadiums.”
