New stand in Fuerth Image: SpVgg Greuther Fuerth

German 2. Bundesliga club SpVgg Greuther Fürth has revealed plans to modernise the Back Straight Stand at its Sportpark Ronhof stadium.

Greuther Fürth said the new stand, once completed, will also house a state-of-the-art medical and physiotherapy center and an innovation center, all of which will be open to the public.

Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth, commonly known as Greuther Fürth, is a German football club based in Fürth, Bavaria. They play in the 2. Bundesliga, the second tier of the German football league system, following relegation from the Bundesliga in the 2021–22 season.

Sportpark Ronhof is an association football stadium in the district of Ronhof in Fürth, and the home ground of 2. Bundesliga team SpVgg Greuther Fürth

The stadium was originally opened on 11 September 1910 under the name Sportplatz am Ronhofer Weg gegenüber dem Zentral-Friedhof.

The current Back Straight Stand was built in 1997. It seats approximately 2,500 people and is the lowest stand in the stadium. Since 2018, there has been a beer garden behind it.

In addition, the family block was moved from the south stand to the area of the Back Straight adjacent to the North Stand. However, the whole stand is now in need of modernisation.

Volker Heißmann, President of SpVgg Greuther Fürth said, “The current back straight requires more and more repairs every year. Every year, the LGA has to come and see if it can be approved again. That’s not a permanent solution. That’s why I’m very happy that we can present the plans for the reconstruction of the Back Straight today.

“The great thing I see as president is that we’re moving forward. That we’re not just talking but doing. That we can continue to complete new projects. If we then hopefully stay on schedule and the reconstruction of the back straight is completed, then we’ll celebrate our 125th anniversary. It’s perhaps a coincidence that the two coincide – but actually, there are no coincidences.”

Dr. Thomas Jung, Mayor of the City of Fürth said, “I was curious and excited, and I’m totally impressed. It’s great that the sports association is now going public. It’s presenting something that will then be implemented.

“To do it – and to do it without demanding large sums from the public purse – is worthy of all honor, and I am grateful for that. The club’s economic added value is over €30 million, which is generated for the city. Added to that is a media value of over €10 million.”

Jung said the sports association is extremely important for the city, not only emotionally but also economically.

He added, “From my perspective, it’s remarkable how they’re not just focusing on football, but also on the growing medical market. Medical care is also a flagship for the city. The fact that another medical care center is being built here in northern Fürth is very important for the city’s further development – beyond the Ronhof.

“When it comes to start-up support, the city of Fürth honestly still has some catching up to do, which is why I think the third pillar is so wonderful. It’s a wonderful thought that we’re now getting a significant facility for start-up development here in the stadium, and we as a city will be contributing to this in the coming years.”

Peter Dankerl, Chief Medical Officer at Evidia, said, “We at Evidia are delighted to be a partner in the new Back Straight project. At Evidia, we focus on medical excellence in imaging and put our patients first.

“Our goal is to provide comprehensive care for everyone, both for elite athletes and for outpatients. In addition to high-quality orthopaedic diagnostics, we will also be able to offer excellent imaging in cardiology and neurology, as well as specialty and preventive examinations, here at the Ronhof – and thus the best possible care for everyone.”
