Oak View Group to sell for Pimlico Race Course Image: Pimlico Race Course

Oak View Group (OVG) has been selected to manage Pimlico Race Course hospitality sales ahead of the grand reopening of the historic home of the Preakness Stakes.

Wunderfan said the strategic partnership comes as Pimlico undergoes a massive $500 million reconstruction, set to unveil a state-of-the-art clubhouse and grandstand next year.

OVG’s proven track record in transforming venue revenue streams was a key factor in their selection.

They previously revitalized the former Baltimore Arena, now CFG Bank Arena, boosting its annual sponsorship revenue from $250,000 to an impressive $17 million.

This success in increasing partnership value has generated significant local confidence in OVG’s ability to drive similar results for Pimlico.

Pimlico Race Course is a thoroughbred horse racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland (US) most famous for hosting the Preakness Stakes.

Its name is derived from the 1660s when English settlers named the area where the facility currently stands in honor of Olde Ben Pimlico’s Tavern in London (a famous alehouse or tea garden in Hoxton, London (UK) in the 17th century).

Bill Knauf, president/GM of The Maryland Jockey Club, said, “Locally, they [OVG] have a great reputation, because of their work there, and they just struck us as really having [sponsorship] industry knowledge.”

This sentiment highlights OVG’s deep understanding of the market and the sports venue sector.

In a unique move for thoroughbred racing, Oak View Group will also explore naming and presenting sponsorship opportunities for the new Pimlico as part of its Pimlico Race Course hospitality sales deal.

While “Pimlico” must remain in the venue’s name, the Maryland Jockey Club is open to entitling partnerships that offer mutual benefit, blending historic charm with modern commercial appeal.

Pimlico Race Course, a venue steeped in history since its opening in 1870 and host to the second jewel of the Triple Crown since 1909, is being rebuilt to preserve its legacy while embracing future growth.

Although this year’s Preakness Stakes will be held at Laurel Park due to the reconstruction, the upcoming re-opening of Pimlico promises an electrifying new era for horse racing.

As the centerpiece of Maryland’s Thoroughbred racing industry—which sustains more than 28,000 jobs and has generated approximately $3 billion in economic impact—the new Pimlico Race Course will be a year-round hub of economic activity for Park Heights, surrounding communities, and Baltimore City.
