Nürnberg city council agree to Max-Morlock-Stadion rebuild

German football club FC Nürnberg has been given the green light by the city council to rebuild the Max-Morlock-Stadion.

Bulinews said Nürnberg city council agreed to the remodelling of the Max-Morlock-Stadion at their latest meeting.

The municipal representatives unanimously instructed the administration to pursue the plan to demolish and rebuild part of the historic stadium.

FC Nürnberg said the preferred option for the Max-Morlock-Stadion redevelopment demonstrates that a modern stadium with a capacity of around 50,000 spectators can be built within the planned budget.

For international matches, more than 40,000 seats will be available. The running track will be removed, and the stands will be moved closer to the pitch, creating a much more intense football atmosphere.

At the same time, the design improves accessibility and the quality of the visitor experience, while also enhancing opportunities for events and other commercial uses, the club said.

The goal is set to extend the number of spectator seats from 36,000 to 50,000 for league games. According to the initial plan, the reconstruction will be completed for the start of the 2031/32 season.

The 50,000-capacity Max-Morlock-Stadion is a stadium in Nuremberg, Germany, which opened in 1928. It neighbors the Nuremberg Arena.

Since 1966, it has served as the home stadium of the German 2. Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg. During the 1972 Summer Olympics, the venue hosted six football matches.

The 2. Bundesliga side need to find a temporary home during the reconstruction work. Nürnberg have called Max-Morlock-Stadion home since 1963 as they celebrated their only Bundesliga title there in 1968.

The Bavarians compete in 2. Bundesliga since their latest Bundesliga relegation in 2019.

According to Transfermarkt, Miroslav Klose’s side had an average attendance of 35,180 during the 2025/26 season.

The stadium also hosted several games of the Germany women’s national team this year.
