Lazio get conditional go-ahead for Stadio Flaminio revamp

Italian football club Lazio’s €480 million redevelopment plans for the abandoned Stadio Flaminio in Rome have received a conditional green light from authorities.

Gazzetta said, however, that the preliminary Services Conference and the Superintendency highlighted issues with the proposed stand and the roof.

The plans include a 50,570-seat stadium, a Lazio museum and more than 4,400 parking spaces.

SS Lazio is an Italian professional sports club based in Rome, (Italy). It plays in Serie A, the highest level of the Italian football league system, and has spent most of its history in the top tier of Italian football.

The now-closed 24,973-capacity Stadio Flaminio is a stadium in Rome (Italy). It lies along the Via Flaminia (ancient Roman Road), three kilometers Northwest of the City Centre, and 300 meters away from the Parco di Villa Glori (City Park in Rome).

Stadion Flaminio redevelopment plans

Lazio’s plans for the Stadion Flaminio redevelopment have been under discussion for several months.

After the club submitted the required amendments in early July, they awaited feedback from all involved authorities: the Municipality, Region, State and Capitoline Superintendencies, Prefecture, Police Headquarters, Fire Brigade, and public utility providers.

Gazzetta further stated that the verdict is favourable, but the project will require modifications. The primary concern revolves around the structure itself.

The architects have designed a new stand that would encircle the existing one. This proposed work would effectively obscure Pier Luigi Nervi’s original creation, which is a protected national monument.

A further issue pertains to the current canopy, which Lazio intends to demolish, but technical experts insist on retaining.

Lazio must address these objections and secure definitive approval, in addition to gaining public interest, initially from the Council and subsequently from the Capitoline Assembly.

S.S. Lazio has expressed ‘great satisfaction’ with the favourable opinion issued by the State Superintendency during the preliminary Services Conference concerning the Flaminio Stadium redevelopment project.

A club statement read, “The club will meticulously review the stipulations put forth by the State Superintendency, which will serve as invaluable directives for the design team tasked with developing the project.

“This represents a significant milestone, enabling the administrative process to advance and bolstering the tangible prospect of restoring one of Rome’s most prestigious and iconic venues to the city.”

Sponsorship termination

Meanwhile, Lazio has confirmed the termination of its sponsorship agreement with Polymarket.

Following the platform’s website being blocked again in Italy by the Customs and Monopolies Agency on 27^th July, Lazio had already removed all references to their then official sponsor from its official website.

Now, the relationship has been formally concluded. The club said in a statement: “S.S. Lazio and Polymarket, in light of new directives from the competent Authorities, have mutually agreed to terminate their sponsorship arrangement.

“S.S. Lazio announces that it has reached a consensual termination agreement with Polymarket regarding the sponsorship contract signed between the parties. As part of the settlement, Polymarket will pay S.S. Lazio the full amount stipulated in the contract for the 2026-2027 sports season.

“Despite the conclusion of the contractual relationship, both parties affirm that they have maintained mutual respect and a collaborative spirit, and intend to continue institutional dialogue. Should the regulatory landscape permit it again, S.S. Lazio and Polymarket will favourably consider the possibility of initiating a new partnership.”
