PFC Levski Sofia and IPA – Architecture have highlighted the latest progress on the new Georgi Asparuhov Stadium project.

The new stadium will have a capacity of 27,826 seats under Bulgarian Football Union requirements and 25,026 seats under UEFA requirements.

It is being designed to meet UEFA Category 4 standards, including the additional requirements for hosting UEFA Champions League league-phase matches.

PFC Levski Sofia is a Bulgarian professional football club based in Sofia (capital city of Bulgaria) which competes in the First League, the top division of the Bulgarian football league system.

The 17,688-capacity Georgi Asparuhov Stadium is a multipurpose stadium situated in the Suhata reka neighborhood of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia.

Named after the legendary Bulgarian footballer Georgi Asparuhov (1943-1971) it has been the home ground of the Bulgarian association football club Levski Sofia since its opening in 1963.

One of the stadium’s most distinctive architectural features will be its digital facade.

The design includes an approximately 390-meter panoramic LED ribbon, two large 24 × 9-meter scoreboards, around 1,520 sq m of facade-mounted LED screens, approximately 2.5 kilometers of facade lighting, and about 100 meters of media facade.

All of these elements will operate as an integrated system, allowing content to be synchronized with match-day scenarios, club campaigns, and other events.

The facade will be able to adapt to different uses and occasions, becoming an active part of both the fan experience and PFC Levski’s visual identity.

The project has also welcomed a new international engineering partner with experience on the Santiago Bernabéu.

German engineering firm schlaich bergermann partner sbp has contributed to some of Europe’s most recognizable stadiums, including Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London and the Olympic Stadium in Munich.

SBP will provide consulting expertise to support the optimization of the structural design for the new Georgi Asparuhov Stadium.

The project has also advanced significantly in terms of its functional organization. Sector A will serve as the stadium’s main hub, spanning five above-ground and two underground levels.

It will bring together the sports, administrative, media, and VIP functions, along with a fan shop, exhibition space, restaurant, media center, and a multifunctional hall of approximately 1,275 sq m.

Several of these spaces will be able to operate independently outside match days.

The new Georgi Asparuhov Stadium is being designed as an active year-round home for PFC Levski, not simply a venue used on match days.

The fan shop, museum, restaurant, and selected public spaces will be able to operate independently, while the multifunctional hall and VIP areas will accommodate conferences, corporate events, fan gatherings, and other activities. The stadium is also being designed to host major concerts.

The project extends beyond the stadium itself. The surrounding area will be redeveloped as part of the overall architectural concept, with new pedestrian routes, landscaped green spaces, and recreational areas accessible to the wider public.

The ambition is for the new Georgi Asparuhov Stadium to become one of the most modern sports venues in Southeastern Europe, combining the standards required for top-level international football with the identity, needs, and community of PFC Levski.

Construction is targeted to begin in June 2027.
