Sustainability at heart of Levski Sofia super stadium plans

The Bulgarian professional association football club PFC Levski Sofia (Bulgaria) has unbolted majestic plans for a £105 million super stadium which will be in a position to host the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League clashes and massive concerts. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2027.

The sustainability quotient will be at the forefront and the super stadium will enjoy energy-efficient systems, premium materials and plans to revitalize the area encircling the super stadium including improved public park spaces.

‘THE SUN’ stated that the above ambitious super stadium proposal marks a major step forward for the Bulgarian side as they look to cement their place among Europe’s top-flights both on and off the pitch.

The PFC Levski Sofia is a Bulgarian professional association football club based in Sofia (capital city of Bulgaria) which competes in the First League, the top division of the Bulgarian football league system.

The 17,688-capacity Georgi Asparuhov Stadium is a multipurpose stadium situated in the Suhata reka neighborhood of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia. Named after the legendary Bulgarian footballer Georgi Asparuhov (1943-1971) it has been the home ground of the Bulgarian association football club Levski Sofia since its opening in 1963.

Smart Stadium

‘THE SUN’ further stated that the Levski Sofia gave a shape to their vision to build an avant-garde venue at the site where their present home ground – the Georgi Asparuhov Stadium – sits. The super stadium will be at par with the most chic-top venues of Europe.

The £105m development will see a state-of-the-art, multiuse facility coming up meeting UEFA’s highest Category IV standards. That would allow it to host elite European fixtures as well as major international matches in the future.

Jaw-dropping Design

The jaw-dropping concept and design was unveiled by Levski Sofia in tandem with the architectural and engineering firm IPA.

One of the striking features of the facility is the design itself which will come equipped with a futuristic façade made from perforated metal panels.

The integrated lighting will not only create an outstanding visual identity but will also provide a shot in the arm to acoustics and reduce noise pollution in the area skirting the stadium.

Inside, the supporters will benefit from a fully covered seating bowl with a sweeping roof supported by steel trusses to provide protection from the weather elements.

The super stadium construction will combine a solid monolithic structure for the main stand with prefabricated elements in the other sections ensuring comfort, safety and excellent sightlines throughout.

Capacity

The capacity of the venue has been pegged at 24,718 seats under Bulgarian regulations, or 23,032 under the UEFA rules for European games.

But the venue will be of an adaptable nature and will be able to pack in 40,000 fans for concerts and other major acts.

The above project was officially unveiled by the club President Nasko Sirakov, Owner Atanas Bostandzhiev and the IPA Managing Director Tsvetan Petrov.
