The AFL Architects recently announced its role in the proposed refurbishment of the iconic Portuguese National Stadium located in Vale do Jamor, Lisbon (Portugal).

‘AFL’ stated that the above ambitious project unveiled by the Portuguese Football Federation (Federação Portuguesa de Futebol – the governing body of football in Portugal) and the Ordem dos Arquitectos (OA – Portugal’s professional organization for architects) will see the AFL collaborating with the renowned architectural firms of Lisbon – Aires Mateus and Gonçalves Vieira Cruz – as part of the winning team.

The AFL Architects create places for communities to live, play and thrive – working alongside the communities every step of the way. They are architects, master planners, urban and interior designers, operating internationally from offices in Manchester and London (UK).

The 37,593-capacity Portuguese National Stadium is a football stadium. It is located in the Southwestern part of Lisbon District (Portugal).

‘AFL’ further stated that as a listed heritage site the National Stadium holds profound cultural and historical significance.

The proposed design sensitively reimagines the stadium to meet the modern needs while preserving its unique integration within the natural landscape of the Vale do Jamor (the Jamor Valley in Portuguese and refers to a geographical area near Oeiras, Portugal, known for its natural beauty). The design is a balance of heritage and innovation.

The National Stadium’s defining feature is its harmonious integration with the surrounding topography. AFL’s design respects this foundational concept embedding modern elements seamlessly into the terrain while preserving the original character of the site.

The centerpiece of the proposal is a new ‘topographical roof’ that complements the stadium’s surroundings.

Drawing inspiration from the original design the roof harmonizes with key architectural elements such as the Honour Stand and the Colonnades while maintaining a strong connection to the natural terrain. This ensures a visual and structural continuity between the built environment and its landscape.

The innovative roof system uses a Pratt truss structure supported at four strategic points for optimal load distribution. A translucent fabric cladding enhances the aesthetic subtly concealing the structural elements and creating a lightweight, elegant appearance.

The refurbishment aims to transform the stadium into a cutting-edge facility for the athletes, the spectators and the staff.

The key enhancements include:

  • A striking new roof inspired by the stadium’s heritage;
  • VIP and VVIP lounges for premium experiences;
  • State-of-the-art media facilities;
  • Modernized amenities for football, rugby and athletics;
  • Improved accessibility throughout the venue;
  • Extended toilet and concession areas;
  • Enhanced spectator sightlines; and
  • Refurbished landscaping that blends seamlessly with the Vale do Jamor.

With significant upgrades across its facilities the stadium will continue to serve as a premier destination for football, rugby and athletics all while preserving its unique integration into the natural landscape.
