FPF looking for a stadium designer of Estádio Nacional in Lisbon Image: Portugese Football Federation

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has set the ball rolling as regards launching a contest to select the design team for the total repurposing of the National Stadium in Dafundo, Portugal. The standards set for the contest is pretty high so that the FPF can zero in on the cream-of-the-crop design firm.

‘Portuguese Football Federation’ stated that the design contest has been launched as part of a collaboration deal struck by the Portuguese Athletics Federation, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), the Portuguese Rugby Federation (FPR), the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ), the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC), and the Municipality of Oeiras in July 2023 to fully redevelop the National Stadium.

Dafundo (Portugal)-based the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is the governing body of football in Portugal. The federation was formed in 1914 as the Portuguese Football Union by the three existing regional associations of Lisbon, Portalegre and Porto, before adopting its current name in 1926, and is based in the City of Oeiras.

The 37,593-capacity Estádio Nacional, also known as the National Stadium Sports Complex and as the Jamor Sports Complex, is a football stadium. It is located in the civil parish of Algés, Linda-a-Velha e Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo, in the Municipality of Oeiras, in the Southwestern part of Lisbon District, Portugal.

Linda-a-Velha (Portugal)-based the Portuguese Athletics Federation, also known as the Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo (FPAtletismo), is a non-Governmental organization that promotes and directs athletics for both men and women. The federation organizes the Portuguese Indoor and Outdoor Athletics Championships and has 21 regional associations.

Lisbon (Portugal)-based the Portuguese Rugby Federation (FPR) is the governing body for rugby union in Portugal. Founded in 1926, the FPR organizes the Campeonato Nacional de Rugby, Portugal’s main rugby union championship.

Lisbon (Portugal)-based the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (IPDJ) is a public body in Portugal that develops, plans, implements, and evaluates public policies for the youth. These policies include youth participation, citizenship, youth work, youth associations, youth volunteering, and youth employment.

Ajuda (Portugal)-based the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC) is responsible for managing, conserving and enhancing Portugal’s cultural heritage. The DGPC is a Directorate-General under the Ministry of Culture.

‘Portuguese Football Federation’ further stated that the design contest has been launched in two phases. The first phase contest will select the top five design firms.

The design contest is being promoted by the FPF and the design firms participating in the contest must boast an estimated base value of 1 million euros + value-added tax (VAT) and must be affiliated to the Order of Architects and Tecnoplano.

The Order of Architects is a legal entity established by law, whose members are all people who practice architecture. The five orders of architecture are Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Composite.

Lisbon (Portugal)-based Tecnoplano is a consulting group of multidisciplinary services in Engineering, Architecture, Urbanism, Environment, and Management.
