Almaty will host 2029 Asian Winter Games Image: OCA

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) held on February 5th the signing ceremony of the Host City Contract for the 10th Asian Winter Games scheduled to be staged in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan, in 2029. The signing ceremony took place in Milan, Italy.

‘oca.asia’ stated that the signing ceremony was attended by His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Olympic Council of Asia, along with members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Presidents and representatives of international and continental federations, senior officials, and representatives of the National Olympic Committees.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is a governing body of sports in Asia currently comprising 45-Member National Olympic Committees. Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was elected as the President of the OCA on January 26th, 2026. The headquarters of the OCA is located at Kuwait City, Kuwait.

The Asian Winter Games (AWG) is an international multisport event held every four years for members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) featuring Winter events.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the international, non-Governmental, sports governing body of the modern Olympic Games. Founded in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin and Demetrios Vikelas, it is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. The IOC is the authority responsible for organizing the Summer, Winter and Youth Olympics.

A National Olympic Committee (NOC) is a national constituent of the worldwide Olympic movement. Subject to the control of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) the NOCs are responsible for organizing their athletes’ participation in the Olympic Games. They may nominate Cities within their respective areas as candidates for future Olympic Games. The NOCs also promote the development of athletes and the training of coaches and officials at the national level within their national territories.

‘oca.asia’ further stated that the Host City Contract was signed between the Olympic Council of Asia and the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan as part of the completion of the institutional procedures approved for hosting the continental event.

Astana (Kazakhstan)-based the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan is the National Olympic Committee representing Kazakhstan. It is a Member of the Olympic Council of Asia.

His Excellency the President of the Olympic Council of Asia emphasized that the signing of the Host City Contract underscores the Olympic Council of Asia’s commitment to advancing Winter sports across Asia.

His Excellency further noted that the Asian Winter Games serve as an important platform for strengthening cooperation and solidarity among the National Olympic Committees in line with the Olympic Council of Asia’s vision to advance Asian sport at all levels.

The Almaty 2029 Asian Winter Games will mark the 10th edition of the event and are expected to witness broad participation from across the continent reflecting the growing Asian presence in Winter sports and the continued development of their organizational and technical structures.
