The Premier League team Liverpool F.C. will welcome supporters into the upper section of the Anfield Road Stand (Liverpool, England, UK) for the first time on December 17th after receiving a licence from the Liverpool City Council.

‘THIS IS ANFIELD’ stated that ‘The Reds’ were required to hold a test event prior to receiving sign-off for the new top tier from the local Ground Safety Advisory Group.

And, after the test event went off without a hitch, Liverpool has been given the green light to welcome fans into the stand for this weekend’s meeting with their peer team the Manchester United F.C.

The Liverpool Football Club is a professional football club based in Liverpool, England (UK). The club competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. Founded in 1892, the club joined the Football League the following year and has played its home games at the Anfield since its formation.

The Anfield Stadium is a football stadium in Anfield, Liverpool, England (UK), which has a seating capacity of 54,074, and is currently under expansion to seat 61,276 which will make it the fifth-largest football stadium in England. It has been the home of Liverpool F.C. since their formation in 1892.

The Anfield Road Stand is located on the left side of the Main Stand at Anfield. It’s where the away fans sit during matches. The lower tier of the Anfield Road End is usually reserved for about 2,000 away fans. The stand also features the Family Zone, which has activities for families.

Liverpool (UK)-based the Liverpool City Council is the governing body for the City of Liverpool in Merseyside, England. It consists of 85 Councilors for the City’s 64 Wards. Following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission the number of Wards increased to 64 following elections held in May 2023.

London (UK)-based the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) is the UK Government’s independent adviser on sports grounds safety. In 2009, the SGSA published guidance on safety certification, including the role, membership and management of the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) which provides advice to the local authorities on how to ensure spectator safety at the sports grounds.

‘THIS IS ANFIELD’ further stated that an extra 7,000 supporters will be allowed to attend taking Anfield’s overall capacity to 57,000.

That is still 4,000 short of the stadium’s full capacity once complete, though it is hoped that figure will be reached by the end of January.

Work continues around the clock to fit out internal areas such as the hospitality sections which will not be in use for the December 17th game.

The Liverpool City Council will meet again in January to consider approval for a full safety certificate to include the front 12 rows of the upper tier of the Anfield Road Stand.

If approved that would allow ‘The Reds’ to host a full capacity match of 61,000 fans.
